Wooo, junkyards are fun!

Went to the junkyard today and they had only *4* 95-99 max's... weird, because it's a huge junkyard. I think they had more m3's then that, heh. But anyways, only one of them still had an engine, and I was looking for the lower half of an airbox. Lucky me, someone ripped off the top assembly already and what I needed was just out in plain view

Five minutes and five dollars later I was on my way to home depot to pickup a dremmel (I finally had an excuse to buy one! Had to wait until I had a valid reason for buying one so I wouldn't get *****ed at.)

Went to town on cleaning, then cut out the entire side towards the drivers side fender, and put it in. It's only been a few hours but I already have fallen in love with this hacked airbox, it's fantastic! I wouldn't say I can *feel* any increase in power, but obviously the air flow is much greater, so it may have gained 1hp if anything, but the throaty sound it makes at 1/2 throttle or more is absolutely fantastic. I suggest anyone that cant afford expensive mods but wants good sounds does this basically free modification; great improvement!

the one I went to was robertsons in wareham, about 10 mins from the bourne bridge. normally I would NEVER go there, because the people are such *******s, but it was about to rain and I wanted to do it all before it did (which it never did... figures.)

a really good junkyard can be found in middleborough on 18, "middleborough auto salvage." there's about three right in close proximity to one another. Hank Zion's has some newer cars, but I've never been there. also, I can't vouch for middleborough auto salvage to have a lot of maxs, because I haven't been there since I owned mine; but I would imagine they would have atleast 10 4th gens there, it's pretty large place.

the best part about this place is it's the old type of junkyard, with a few sleazy employees and a rundown shack up front. they sell you the parts for dirt *** cheap, I love going there

I don't get the point of cutting the bottom airbox. I mean, I completly removed the top part of the airbox, wont that let air flow better even more? And what does the resonator do?

Well, the top part is connected to the MAF sensor and if you remove it there is no filter there to filter the air. I'm trying to imagine how you did that. The bottom part would be there with the maf and the resonator just dangling around.

Oh well, forgot to mention that I put a reactive air filter and just bolt the sensor to a steel "blade" (not exactly a blade but don't know how to call it) and bolt the blade to the car so the sensor is as close to the air filter as it can be

Hacked my airbox right before I was gonna go buy an injen CAI. Saved me $200 and a ton of work.

I know what you're saying. For me, it is nice to be able to tell where the RPM's are by sound, which was impossible to do stock.

Tomservo, why did you have to go to a junkyard to hack your airbox? I'm assuming you had some kind of aftermarket intake before?

nope i just didnt want to F up my airbox and then hate it. got a 2nd bottom half to cut the side off of just incase, and I love it. So i'm out 5 bucks + a new tool rather then spending 200+ on an intake that would have killed my low end torque.

for those that dont understand, you arent cutting away the whole bottom. you're cutting out the smallest side of the bottom box, that faces the driverside fender. its a triangle probably with about 3" on either side of the 90* angle.

at idle it makes no diff, it really makes no diff at all until the throttle is above 1/2 open, then you know there's a difference. i like it quite a bit!

I would normally have posted all kinds of pics, but my mom is on vacation and took my camera with her. sorry, you'll just have to imagine

hmm... i'll have to go to a junkyard around my area to find a max that has a sensor built into its washer fluid reservoir and do a tank swap, since I don't have the deluxe pkg on my Max, but I read that we're pre-wired for the low-washer fluid warning light

tomservo291, good find on your airbox

I cut out the fender side and the battery side. I really don't think it makes a whole lot of difference.

Yep, I did the same thing, but I didn't take quite so much off the battery side. And Tomservo, welcome to the hacked airbox club.

I researched a lot of intakes before coming to the conclusion that the GHETTO AIRBOX was the best. Everyone with an aftermarket intake who switches back to stock for whatever reason is amazed at how much better the throttle response is, haha.

i just completely removed the lower portion of the airbox, and used some wire to hold the filter to the top portion of it. sounds wonderful. oh yeah, nice name VQuick(masaccio).
