looking for an exhaust
I need a new exhaust. It was rattling and loose for a very long time, and when i went to get it fixed ( missing like 4 hangers) i noticed that it got bent pretty bad. I need something quiet, yet with performance in mind. Price.. 350- 400 Max. I saw the Pacesetter on Ebay, but i heard its not very solid. Chicago winters will kill it in one or two years.

Just the muffler or b-pipe as well? I'd suggest you get a local shop to bend a b-pipe for you (stainless steel) and have them recommend a muffler that suits your needs. Paying out the nose for a catback like I did is stupid now that I look back on it.

Muffler is a part of the catback; find a local muffler shop and ask them how much it would cost to have a 2.5" b-pipe bent for your Max; it should be around $60. Make sure it's got at least one resonator though, preferably two. I had to have a second resonator welded to my GReddy SP2 because it only had one and was WAY too loud.

Warpspeed is still having a group deal on their aluminized steel y-pipe. Just call and ask for the GD price, no waiting for other people.
You can get y-pipe for $160 delivered.
You can get high flow catalytic converter for $85 more if you buy it with the y-pipe.
You can get resonated B-pipe and "dynomax clone" muffler for $250.
I have the full WS 2.5" exhaust with "dynomax clone" muffler. It has a deep "beefy" tone to it (as one of my Volkswagen driving friends said). Before I bought it, Dallas said that the muffler would be pretty quiet. It's definitely not as quiet as expected but not as noisy as most aftermarket mufflers I've heard.
It's not LOUD, but definitely has a deep, throaty "grumble" upon any acceleration. I could barely hear my stock exhaust. You will definitely hear this one even with the windows closed. It's dead quite when foot is off the gas - and "grumbles" on even the slightest press of gas peddle. Still getting used to it.
If you want quiet, keep the "stock" style muffler. No other muffler will cut the noise like it can. You supposedly only lose 1 HP versus high flow. If you want a "beefier", "throaty" sound, but not terribly loud, their "dynomax clone" isn't bad.
ALSO: Be aware that going to a 2.5 inch pipe causes some fitment issues (i.e. clanging). You will probably have to do a little tweaking to keep it from hitting heat shield plates and cross braces and causing reverberation into your car. It won't fit perfectly upon direct replacement!

It might be kind of hard to find a local muffler shop that just has SS piping laying around. I mean, most of those places only carry the aluminized steel because it is cheaper. I know that you are in IL, but if that stuff should be good enough for you. It should last you quite a while. It is cheap enough that if you have to do it in like 5-7 years, the money that you would have saved the first time around will pay for it again, if necessary...all for the price of getting a really expensive exhaust.

I have a 2.5" cat back system from warpspeed. Complete b-pipe with resonator and muffler. Dallas built the system to fit on my 96, but the car is up for sale so I saw no reason to put it on (though i had to replace the y-pipe and cat due to corrosion). I can take some pics and send them if interested. lemmeno.

I recently heard a Pacesetter cat back (stock everything else) and since then I've been thinking of getting one. It does not sound like a Greddy at all. Its quiet, with a lil rumble at WOT, and some raspyness. Looks great IMO, black piping, with a 3" to 3.5" tip....looked like it fit well too. Still doesnt sound like a Greddy....they are low and mellow.

Oh Mike. Whatever you get make sure you give me enough time to install it. Like I told you before, if you want it quiet you HAVE TO GO the custom route. It's really your only choice. Custom b-pipe with the stock muffler or better yet a 5th gen muffler. A 5th gen muffler will run you around $100 and the b-pipe can be made for well under $100.

The WS2 has a rolled edge tip like the greddy and I don't know what else. They might have changed it to be a full stainless steel unit now where the WS is a SS muffler and the pipes are powder coated, titanium particle.
#26
I don't know if it is. It looks better cause of the rolled tip I guess but I bet it weighs a bit more. I'll be swapping parts from the old max over to the new one so I'll try to get a clip of the WS with stock y-pipe and another one with a budget Y.

I agree....this is a good route.
I kept the stock cat and resonator, but put in a custom 2.5" b-pipe and a 5th gen muffler. It is quiet, but very mean sounding at WOT. It is not loud in a ricer kind of way, but just sounds like a lot of engine, not muffler.
Anyway, here are a couple of pics:

yeah, looks a little busted-up. it must be nice anyway...if i were you, i wouldnt care too much about the slight crooked-ness because who looks at your muffler anyway? barely anyone...most people are admiring the rest of your car.

well i'm going in the morning to get my flowmaster 40 series delta flow put on with a custom 2.5" b-pipe. i believe my stock resonator is causing a sort of buzzing noise, so i dont want to reuse it. first i am going to try out without resonator. if its too loud i think i will try and throw a cherry bomb on there. a few guys on here and at the local shop said those actually work pretty well as a resonator.
i just hope it doesn't sound too ridiculous! i hate wasting money on stuff that i end up not liking. it makes me wanna myself.
