Humming / groaning while idling

After starting my car up there is an audible hum/groan that can best be described as very similar to the clutch groan some experience when starting into 1st gear. It is not as loud but with the radio off it is noticable. I can also "feel" the groan if I put my foot on the dead pedal. The sound does not go away even after the car has warmed up. Does not seem to affect drivability - although I do feel lost power lately for some reason (low-RPM loss).

Groan seems to lessen (in frequency - not audible volume) when/if A/C is off - but I really don't have it off much this time of year in FL. I only mention this because my AC is extremely loud lately. I'm going to have a tech take a look at all of this and probably just drop a grand or so on general maintenance and such - but I'd like to go in informed (as I always try to do) so I can help steer the conversation in the right direction.

As usual ... any/all help is appreciated. Educational guesses welcome.

Also forgot to mention, it is not a steady hum or groan, but rather "pulsating" for lack of a better term. Fades in and out ...

Anyone?

Yes ... Gen1 Stillen Y and B pipes. I guess it could be something resonating from exhaust ... but it would seem that in that case it would be less frequent ... I can hear it sometimes while travelling and not just idling ... additionally, giving it a little gas while idling does not eliminate the sound, just drowns it out a bit.

Hate to resurrect....

Sorry to pull this from the graveyard, but this is EXACTLY what my problem is, and from the looks of others, it is more common than I thought.

Does anyone want to have a go at this thread again?

Ima bump this until I get yelled at. Not trying to be a douche, but the internal search OR google search isn't coming up with anything.

It's right on the button as far as a description. And it's so elusive, that you can't hear this with your head under the hood. I've stethoscoped as much as I can and I can't find it...

its either your HVAC unit or a bad blower motor bearing.

I have a similar problem. Almost sounds like power steering whine. I listened through a large screwdriver to the alternator, timing cover, and belt tensioner, and the noise sounds the same at all 3 points - quite loud. i havent gotten to the power steering pump yet as the screwdriver isn't long enough.

I'm having the high pitch whine coming espeically from the passenger side.
The pitch gets louder with RPM changes.
It's constantly there, as soon as the car is on, idling, accel/decelerating.

This whine comes from the SPEAKERS!!! because when I disconnected the oem amp, the noise is completely GONE.

I believe this is known as the "Alternator Whine"
Bose Premium stock, changed new alternator and changed the oem amp, but noise still remains.

Did anyone take care of their "whine" problem??? it's bugging the crap out of me.

Sorry to bump this old thread but it was the closest I could find to the issue I'm having with this low groaning/humming noise when car is idling that kind of pulsates in and out.

Sounds like a few other people had this exact problem. I've replaced so much crap on my car and and cleaned everything but can't seem to eliminate this. Also since this started happening several years ago seems my cars acceleration is kind of slower than normal and my gas mileage isn't as good. Anyone ever figure this out?

There are a lot of threads under the terms "drone" and "droning" that sound like what you're talking about, but it's hard to tell whether the noise is the same for everybody. Some people have said replacing the FPR solved the problem, but I can't attest to that.

As far as poor acceleration, that sounds like knock sensor, but it could be a lot of things. CEL on? If not, does the light work? And make sure your plugs are in good shape (and they're NGKs).

No CEL (don't know if the light is burned out but I have a scan tool and when I scan there are no codes). Yeah i've looked through the drone/droning threads and have replaced FPR to no avail. Also have replaced knock sensor. I've taken off the UIM several times since this started and have cleaned everything thouroughly. Strange thing is you can't hear it in the engine bay only side the vehicle and can feel it through the pedals and steering wheel. I'm thinking it has something to do with the exhaust but not sure how to test it.
