Anybody done their timing chains (themselves)?

Anybody done their timing chains (themselves)?

Im doing my chains and i got everything off except the powersteering pump and upper and lower oil pans. i was wondering if anyone has snuck by without taking these off.

...any other comments or tips on doing this jjob would be helpful too...thanks

Cannot be done without removing the oilpans. A major pain in the butt.
I have done one before and it was a huge job, not beyond ability but in sheer time. A lot of gasket scraping and cleaning is required. The last thing you want is an oil leak.

Did you break a tensioner or something?
I mean, why is it necessary to change it?
I thought it was self-adjusting and for life of vehicle?
