Alright, I just got my new 1997 maxima GLE and my service engine soon light came on.. I went to my auto shop and asked my friend what was causing it. He hooked the machine to it and said it was the EVAP vent control valve.. He also said this was common with used cars from a used car dealer, and I could continue driving it (but might lose gas millage)..

My question is what exactly is this valve? And is it really alright to drive with?

I clearly want to get the light off, but I have to wait till the dealer takes care of it.

Check the connection of the thing first and reset your CEL (check the sticky at the top of the forum). If I got that code then I would just buy a used one (check/ask in the Classified section) and replace it myself. I wouldn't go to the stealership

If I have a problem, I usually just go to my mechanic and he tells me what's wrong and what needs to be replaced for free Then I do it myself if it's easy

 

i got a brand new one from the stealership for less then 80$.
