Gear ratio differences btwn. 4th/5th gen. trannsmissions.
I'm looking to swap a 5 spd. 5th gen. trannsmission into my '96 SE due to extreme failures with my current 4th gen. My question is will acceleration be different due to different gear ratios, if there is a difference. If there is a difference between the tranny's that will affect it, will it yield me better acceleration, or will it hurt me...I can't remember who did this swap, can someone give me his name so that I can pm him with my questions?

I'm sure they do. I'm guessing in the $1500-$2000 range. Make sure you get the LSD version, not the open diff. The model number of the LSD trans is RS5F50V, tell them you want a 2001 LSD trans from the anniversary edition maxima.

yea supposely 00+ tranny has stronger 1st and 3rd? not sure but it is different from the 4th gen. It will work in the 4th gen tho. There are a few people using it and everyone says the shifter sits further back...maybe cause 5th gen is longer?? dunno. ill be putting a 5th gen trans in my 95 soon

I know that the 95-96 are different from all the others. The 97+ all have a different style 2nd gear synchronizer from the 95-96. If he asks for a LSD trans from a 2001 maxima I don't think they'll give him a non LSD trans.

My mother decided to call up a Nissan dealership near my area, and for a new '96 5 spd. transmission, they quoted her $2300. Fu.. that. Not only am I not going to put in a tranny from anything less than a '98, but that sure seems steep. Everyone's estimate was a grand and a half to two. I don't know...How sure can I be that the infamous '95-'97 internal bearing problems have been fixed since Nissan is still producing replacement transmissions? LSD would be nice though...
Also, when you say that the shifter is sitting farther back, does that mean 2nd, 4th, and reverse rub against the edge of the panel?

Wow...that's nuts. I'm working with the dealer I bought my car from as we speak to figure out the best way to go. I.E., in their perspective...the cheapest way to fix the car. Hopefully he'll find that this is ok, if I am willing to put a little more forth for a brand new tranny. Who knows...I'll keep posting the progress.

I actually went to Jerry Rome NIssan, and I couldn't find the complete transmission for sale. It is just letting me search for individual parts...can someone post the link to the whole tranny swap?

Go to the Jerry Rome website and search for part no. 320102Y917. Or, search the parts catalog for a 2001 Maxima, click on the "Mechanical" tab, click on "Transaxle," and then click on "Manual Transaxle." Scroll down to the bottom of the parts list, click on "Transaxle Assembly" and then you will see the "Special Edition" transaxle.
