Rear breaks making noise only in reverse
Rear breaks making noise only in reverse
Any idea's on why my rear breaks are making noise only when i am backing up and when the breaks are cold. The noise seems to go away once the car has been driven for a while.
My car does that. I'm on MM's and Brembos. Oddly enough the brake squeel that i got in Toronto for the first time since the pads/rotors were new are now gone. I tried 'bedding' them in again and i guess it worked.

Two possibilities I can think of:
1) A TSB was issued some time ago regarding "groaning" at low speed by the rear calipers. There was a shim kit offered by Nissan to correct this problem. You can go to www.nhtsa.gov and look it up, then take it to the dealer and see what they'll do about it.
2) Maxima rear calipers are known to corrode and the piston starts to stick in the bore. Don't know why, they just do. It may be that one (or both, I suppose) of your rear calipers is corroded and requiring replacement. You might want to have someone check to be sure the operation of the calipers is up to snuff, especially the right rear...

I recall that a rebuilt caliper was about $100 locally, but I did shop around a bit. Prices ranged from $415 from the dealer down to the low- mid-hundreds for the autozone/napa type place. Core was $75 I think. I didn't feel like waiting for an internet buy to ship.
I did the work myself (pretty straight forward), so the only other cost to me was fluid to bleed out the brake lines when the replacement was in place ($5 for 1 qt of Castrol dot-4) and I decided to replace pads too since I was in there ($50 from the dealer -- factory pads do NOT have any brake dust, so I always buy factory...). Total job, about $155 with new pads both sides.

There have been reports of a "foghorn-like" noise that comes from the rear brakes momentarily, only when backing up....then, it goes away.
I too have this happen with my Maxima every once in a while. I think the conclusion that I read is that unless you can tell they are really sticking, nothing is wrong. It is just annoying.

i replaced the brake pads on all 4 wheels myself, i didnt put a shim kit on any of them, they are wisper quite EXEPT when reverse (loud as heck high pitch squeel). however i have found that if i use my ebrake when braking in reverse they are quiet once again, try it yourself and let us know.

well I am 100% sure the shim's are there and I havent replaced my breaks since a year. They were working fine until a few days ago.
The only thing i can think of that started causing it is either my rotors got damaged from hard breaking or something else happened.
I dont really buy the sticking cylinder story cause that wouldnt happen just on reverse, that would cause the brakes to make that noise even when driving forward until the cylinders got unstuck, but in my case it has constantly been making a sqeeling noise when in reverse and only when the rotors and pads are cold. It never happens when going forward hot or cold and it stops making noise in reverse once the rotors and pads are hot from driving.
