When i go to clean it with the Gunk de-greaser, do i just put it on plastic everywhere and all the wires that are dusty...i really dont know the process. and im scared

i saw this new stuff called "CD2" engine cleaner..its like 17$$ and comes with a cleaner and a shinner... spray the engine..spray on the cleaner...wash it off then spray on the shinning stuff...if anyone has used this before please give me some feadback on how it works??

most ppl

speaking of washing the engine. i took a peek inside mine yesterday evening...and same here, things are pretty gunky and dusty...
I looked around and there are a lot of wires that are not wrapped in the black electrical tape...and like you (and others) it does look quite scary if water does get into some of those parts...
by the same token, I have seen ppl hose thier engine too, and nothing seems to have happened (bad) afterwards...

anyone with a voice on this?!!

does water hitting the alternator directly cause it to short or anything?--which will mean big bucks later...

That what I use to clean my engine "Gunk". I cover up as much as I can, like plugs for the wire harness, intake etc. Cover up anything you think water should not be. It works very good for me. After I use the Gunk I spray a small amount of water to wash some of the gunk away. One down side to the Gunk you'll smell it for about a day or two when the car is hot. But you can eat of the engine when your done.

your procedure

SMX,
for Matty and myself, can you please direct us as to what your procedure is when you do your engine cleaning.
You start off by covering whatever you can (what does that entail? alternator? anything else? the top of the battery?). I know we sound like a bunch of scardy cats but since this is our first time, we want to be as careful as we can so that we don't do any damage to our engine. Do you cover up any of the electrical connectors? the two radiator fans in the front--any electrical components that you bag up?

Lastly before you wash, do you use a garden hose to spray the water? The reason is so that I can gauge how much water and what the water pressure is like. And after wetting the engine, you spray the gunk/ or simple green and let it soak all over? I am assume when you spray, the water is being hosed down all over the engine compartment, correct? and you rinse and dry it by driving around?

again, I sound long winded, and thanks for the input.

Brian

This is my third Maxima and I wash the entire engine and never had a problem. Nevertheless, you have to use common scents. I get a plastic bag like what you get from the grocery and I place it around the alternator, wire harness connectors. Oh I warm up the car for about 10-min, then cover, and do not let it get too hot. I have CAI so I place a bag around the hole where the filter starts, I never cover the battery but I guess you can as for the fans I don't think its necessary. Spray the Gunk on the engine I use about half a can. Let it sit for about 10-15 min. You can take an old toothbrush and brush the spots that you see the grease caked up. Take the garden hose and spray. Use a small amount of water you are just trying to get of as much of the gunk up without using to much water. Its that simple! The key is let the gunk work it does a good job of removing grease. I also use a small amount of an Armor All for the hose and vacuum lines to prevent them from cracking. I don't start the car right away let the engine cool down for about ahour.if the engine is hot the water is cold ....well you know what can happen.Let me know how it turns out.

Starting a wet engine is not going to cause any problems with temp changes. What's BAD is when you spray a hot engine with cold water. The VERY RAPID change in temperature can cause the metal to crack as it shrinks. Slowly warming up a car with water on it is actually recommended so that the heat of the engine will evaporate the water to prevent corrosion.

when your spraying the engine, try not to use full stream. I sprayed simple green over the engine (warmed). Cover your intake with plastic bag and anything you feel necessary(if you are worried about it, cover it) Spray away!!! just don't aim the water directly on the alternator. You can let it dry on its own or wipe it down.

thanks for the instructions

SMX--
thanks for the directions on cleaning the engine...okay, now i know and no, i won't use the water on full stream either. but I will wrap the alternator in a plastic bag to prevent any bad bad things happening to it. I sure as heck know I can't afford to spend any additional money in trying to figure out why my car won't work

Got couple of more questions...what about the wiring harness? what exactly is that and where is it located and do I need to wrap that?
And the other is where the spark plug power packs tubing is, no chance of water seeping in there right?

heheh, I guess for now--that is it...I think I am going to use a blend of detergent/simple green to make sure all that grease and crap is off.

Set the nozzle on mist or if you do not have the mist setting squeeze lightly. The Boost sensor it in the front attached to you air intake that should be coverd, also the map sensor behind the stock filter box. There are a couple of connectors can remember how many but there are gray wire connectors. If you are spraying the light mist of water, you should not be any water under the spark plug power packs.

wahsing it

Well Matty, I am planning my first wash this weekend, if the weather is permitting...and I hope that it does. In certain areas where I do see obscene amoutn of dirt and grime, I will sray some soap/simple green combination on it to let it sit and degrease some of these parts. However, there will be parts that I will want to avoid...but I think as SMX and the others have stated--I am going to follow that up and cove whatever I don't want to get wet and I am not going to drown my engine in water...
but if the weather permits...and I do it...let you guys know how it goes...

I dont know what the hell you guys are thinking by hosing down your engine bays! That can be fatal to the motor if water hits certain electronic sensors and or harneses under the hood. I say break out some shop rags, soapy water and Armorall and wipe down evetything by hand, it takes longer but you dont run the risk of screwing anything up under there. my 2cents!!

I have done this only a couple times with my car and I am a wuss everytime... So I'll just put cleaner on a rag and clean from now on. I had a bad experience with Gunk and the rubber parts in the engine bay. They got discolored but I fixed that with a little armor all type product.
