Camshaft postion sensor

Camshaft postion sensor

I am having a hell of a time getting my 96 max to turn over. When I finally did, the check engine light came on from the high reving(its automatic). I had it scanned and it came back as camshaft postion sensor. Can this sensor throw off the starting of the engine?

i think someone posted in my other thread "yes, it'll affect timing" or something like that.
