Aux gauges lighting to dimmer?

Hey fellas, I was wiring my triple apod pillar aux gauges to the dimmer switch, they turn on with the light stalk but don't dim, the dimmer has 3 wires on the back. Do I need to run the ground to the dimmer also? (aux lights currently chassis grounded). I did try splitting the power wire and tapping into each of the remaining two dimmer wires but that just blew fuses. Any ideas thanks!

The dimmer switch is a variable resistor on the ground side of the circuit. Hook up the power to the headlight switch and the ground to the dimmer. Use a test probe or multimeter to find the correct wires. If you hook it up wrong its not my fault.
