cutting stock springs

im lookin into cutting my stock springs, i dont care how ****ty of a ride i get, i just want to have a nice little drop for free, a buddy of mine has a spring compressor so this should be easy, just wondering when people say they cut their stock springs 2 inches, do u measure from the top of the spring down 2 inches and cut or do u measure from the top and follow down the spiral 2 inches and cut? im looking for a clean drop to get rid of most of my gap, btw im still on stock rims and tires

your car will bottom out easily. stock springs arent meant to be cut, esp 2 inches. ive actually seen someone dammage their strut mounts and blew their shocks after cutting 2.5 inch off stock springs. ( it was funny as hell cause he was trying to beat the rail road track bariers and he hit the RR tracks at like 30 and his car bottomed out super hard, jus lookin at it i got that same feeling u get when u get a football in the groin.

if you want to go cheap get the dropzone kit off of ebay, its struts n springs with a 2 in drop i believe. pretty cheap but im not sure on quality.

we are talkin bout your handling here, this isnt something you want to cheap out on like an intake or cd player. do something right the 1st time and you almost never have to do it again.

good luck dude

Stock or not, cutting springs is STUPID. Cutting them changes their characteristics and makes them less functional.

yeah. cutting your stock springs is a very stupid idea. it's not worth it to risk your life or someone else's on the road.

I had an 88 Acura Legend ALREADY slammed on Intrax 2.75". My dumbass thought it would be cool to go EVEN LOWER so I chopped a few coils off the springs bringing the car to a grand total of 4.25" drop. Boy what a great way to ruin a once beautiful car,( still have pics, btw 18 at the time) i bottomed out everywhere, took reflectors off the road, couldnt clear speedbumps, wore tires in like 300 miles, it was a MESS, but gorgeous. the luxury car rode like a 75 ford pickup with leafsprings hauling *** on a dirt road. Finally i put a hole in the oil pan, forcing me to sell the rims, put it back to stock, new tires, new struts because i blew the **** out of the old ones, what a mess. Moral: if you want to ruin your car, nice or not CHOP AWAY!!

I bought my 98 maxima used and I think it's lowered (it seems about 1.5 inches lower than my friend's 99 maxima). How can I tell if it's cut springs or if it's aftermarket shocks? (I don't know much about cars). I noticed that I feel most of the bumps on the road.

which springs will give me the lowest possible drop, the dropzone kit doesnt look like it drops enough judging by the pics ive seen, would i be better off with a cheap coilover set?

I cut dropzone springs and it drove like absolute ***. Bumpy, it was so loose, it sagged almost to the ground with people in the back. Don't cut them. If you want to go that low, go with Ground Control coilovers

yeah since you don't care so much about ride quality go with ground control coil overs

GC's will bounce so bad, but they are pretty much the cheapest coilover out there. Still about 400 bucks though.

It's very dangerous. Once the stock springs are shortened, they can come unseated on the mounts when driving on a rough road. This would be very bad, possible causing an accident or damage to your car.
Like the others are saying....don't cheap out here. Do it right, or don't do it at all!
