technical 5spd question

We dropped the tranny to reseal the case, and when we opened the case, two ball bearings came out - one half the size of the other. We also had a small spring that fell out. I'm lost as to where the spring goes. I believe the ball bearings go on the 1-2 bolt/spring setup, and the other on the 3-4 shift bolt/spring. I really need help with this guys - the fsm wasn't really much help. Thanks.

They are called Detent *****. They go in the holes that are on the side were your striking rod is (shift linkage hookup) On a re-assembled tranny- remove teh bolts to uncover the holes then the ball goes in first, then the spring and then bolt that screws in.

Simular thing happened to I changed the fluid and a clip, a spring and a ball bearing came out. Put new fluid in and now it feels like theres no resistance between 3 and 4th gear. It goes in way easier now. So reading this Im guessing that its going to screw up my tranny down the road?

^^ you probably might damage your syncros since it may tend to want to pop out of gear since the detent system holds the rods in place, thats why you dont feel it "lock" into gear since the ***** are not there to lock into the notches in the rod

Thing is - the 5th gear striking rod hookup has the spring/ bearing/bolt assembled. 1-2 and 2-3 have the springs there, just not the ball bearings. I still have a spring that doesnt go in any of those three spots.
