Racks on a Maxima

I need to get a rack system for my 95 max before snowboard season starts (which here in central va is way too late) and was wondering how many max owners out there have them, and which brands you prefer, if there are any fitment differences between brands, and also how it looks. If anyone has pics that'd be great. Thanks

Never seen one out there with a rack and I believe it would look like crap if you put one there.

It would look bad, but it's cheaper than a new car

I have not seen a rack specifically for snow boards, but I have seen one for bikes Yakima(or however you spell it).
I didn't think it looked that bad.
I think you can get a snowboard attachment for those.

Yeah, I know it's not gonna look great, I'm just tired of stuffing boards in the trunk and folding down the back seat, and racks would be cheaper than the x-terra I want. The racks would only be on for the 3 months of snow here. I haven't seen any maximas around here with them so I was just hoping someone on here would ride and have pics but thanks for your input anyway.

I've been thinking about putting one on the roof of my max for a mountain bike.

My commute is 100 miles a day and that would cut it in half by taking subway to Decatur then riding a block to school.

The looks, I am not worried about. The wind noise would drive me nuts on the interstate.

there was a thread about this a while back and someone on the org had racks on their max and IMO it didnt look too bad at all. I was thinking about getting racks to use for when we go to Mammoth. I did this crappy photochop a while back of racks on my car.

kinda hard to see them in the pic, but i dont think it looks all that bad. those are the kind of racks that mount through your windows. i completely forgot who makes them (thats no help ) but i do know they make em for the max!

If all you plan on putting on these racks are your snowboards just for the season, you may want to look into a soft rack system. That's what I use to transport my surfboards and kiteboard whenever I go surfing. FCS makes a soft rack system for $50. You couls also find them cheaper on EBAY. It'll be a lot cheaper than a whole roof setup and can easily be removed in the off season or everyday. Hope this helps out.

here's one I found on EBAY.

I'm planning on buying a rack before snowboard season starts too, the best one (although expensive) is the thule 725. Holds 4 snowboards very nicely (with bindings on). Pretty expensive (about 400$ usd)
2 of my friends have them and swear by them (we took 1 halfway across the country on a camry). Definitely what I am buying soon.

Thanks for the pic Todd, not too bad and it deff helps me visualize it. I haven't seen that soft rack system before max96lsu, might look into that. I've been looking at the thule rack and that 725 carrier bender, good to know it's good for the long haul. I usually fly to colorado during the winter but may be driving this year, and would like my boards to stay put for the 1600 miles. Thanks again guys

I've had a Yakima bike rack on mine for about two years now. . . I got some parts used and some new. The most expensive parts of the rack were the towers. It takes some measuring and re-measuring to get it on right, but really it's OK. Don't know if you wash your car with a drive-thru, but you can't do that with the rack. Really, some people do, and you can take a chance, but I don't. Once the rack's on it looks OK, if you keep it clean. Mine's all black. They sell a windfoil type thing, and also a solid wind-shield type of thing that goes across the roof between the two front towers. Personally I made my own windfoil. If you don't have it, the bars start to sing at 58 mph.

I got most of my parts used from Ebay, and got the towers new at an outdoors / bike shop. The rack and components are pretty much indestructible. I even broke the front fork on my bike passing under a low overhang -- the rack survived with a scratch.

i have the yakima setup, they are cheap <$200 and i can literaly take them off or put them on in 1 or 2 minutes( thats the best part.... its not a chore at all to take them off when i dont need them). i have hauled snowboards, tables, canoes, and windsurfers on it without incident, its super quite when stuff is being hauled but it does begin to hum at about 60-70 mph. mine came with free locks which is nice. I like my Yakima.

P.S. my car looks mean with my roof rack on it, i wish i had pictures.

Here are some pics of the Soft Rack setup I mentioned before. It's really simple to install and remove. These pics have the actual board on them but beneath the boards are round foam pads to protect the board and the car. These can easily carry any sort of board whether it's surf, snow, or wake.

Do an yahoo search on "racks" and see what kinda results you get.

And girls have nice racks too. Should check the selection they have.

I had a Thule rack system for a while. It was really basic.

2 cross bars
4 Maxima feet
4 basic bike holders (just QRS on one bar and a tire holder on the other, not the full length piece)

I worked at the bike shop I bought it from, but it was still over $400

I cruise at 80-85 on I-96 with 3 surfboards with no problem. I also use the rack to transport my kite board which is about the same size if not smaller than a snowboard. you shouldn't have any problems. I also like the fact that it's really easy to remove and install.
