loss of power :(

my buddy with his max is having issues with power...his car doesnt get full power and run through gears correctly until about 5100 RPM's...anyone got any suggestions..possible knock sensor?? thanks for the help

Low RPM problems are usually EGR related.

Ok, I took out my EGR and cleaned it. It wasent even clogged and the carbon build up wasent even that bad. I still cleaned it and im having the same issues.

The best way i can explane it is below 5K the car is very slugish, it even sound diffrent.
If i were to race off a roll, and have my rpms in power band at 4K and gun it, the car will grunt and barly take off, then the second i hit about 5K it kicks in hard and takes off kinda like if i were to have Vtec. I know the power issues cuz i raced my friend Clark who is stock and below 5K he pulls on me ( witch shouldent be happening ) then when i hit 5000 i start coming back a little but the second i shift and im below 5 agian he starts leaving me agian.

Any help would be awsome

You do have a Vtec. Vtec is variable timing. The VQ engines have variable timing. Anyway..

Sorry the EGR thing didnt work out.

My dad has an olds LSS supercharged 3800 and his car used to do the same thing. I dont know if the maximas have this but the 3800 supercharged motors have dual firing ignition coils. Low voltage and High Voltage. Took me almost 6 months to figure out that this was the problem.

When he would try to accelerate really hard his high voltage would never kick in on one coil. So the car would miss and be sluggish but at idle and gentle driving it would have all the power in the world (these big beasts have 270 ft/lbs of torque. Feels so good).

What I'm saying is, aside from the EGR, there are many reasons for this. You might need to get your car diagnosed on a computer.

You might have a missing coil, resistance in your wires, a fuel problem, a transmission problem. It might just be your car's "personality".

Keep us posted as to what you find out. I'd be interested to know.

^^thats what we were thinking..hooked it up to the snap on obdII today...monitered timing and we were getting all kinds off crazy timing readings..from 5° advance to 45° advance...sound like a KS to you guys??

also just replaced his maf due to problems which triggered the CEL, now that its been replace no codes since

your problem sounds like my 93 max. but it's because the variable intake is messed up, vtc are dead, and ks is dead... i heard somebody call it "heat soak". but good luck dood.

4th gen max's dont have variable timing only in 2000 and up!

Ok guys i put on a OBD II sensor ( snap on ) on my car today at work ( like clark said above )

my timing was all over the place, from what i read the maxima should be 0-25 mine shot everywhere from -7 to 45! im changing out the Knock sensor asap.

I recorded everything from 0 to 45 with the knock sensor working. I never saw -7 though. What your timing should and should not look like is covered in the FAQ.

uhh...NO. they do NOT. The VQ engines didn't get VVT until the '02 3.5L engines. And the 00-01's still only had a variable intake manifold, still no VVT.
