I was under the impression that if you use their software, you should use their hardware. It asks for a key password or something.

Doesn't elm scan have their own software download?

 

I got it work / connect etc... I understood some of the stuff but it's not very user friendly. I'll have to fiddle with it alot to figure it all out. Gonna try it on my dad's car that actually has a check engine light. I tried it on the wife's rx300 and it works. No enhanced features though.

 

Yeah they have their own, a ton of them, but I hoped they would be compatible.

 

I am using an Elmscan I bought from http://www.scantool.net There are other scanner makers that are reasonably priced. The Elmscan I bought only works on Asian vehicles. That is fine for me as we have a 1995 Maxima and a 2000 Frontier. The software I use is better than digimoto...It's the best I've seen for aftermarket so far. It can be purchased at http://www.palmerperformance.com/ Brian Palmer can answer any questions you might have about the program or several scantools. BTW the 95 Max is OBDII compliant. A lot of the dealers don't even know that. They use a different access plug but on the 95 the connector is located on top of the ecm in the passenger compartment.

 

The Elmscan is reasonable if you only want to spend the $ on Asian(ISO) or specific applications. Once you pay for all the diff formats, it comes to about the as the others. But nice to hear your experiences.

Well, the elmscan is $70 for the box and there are tons of free programs for it. The ISO works on many many cars even if they have different ISO versions or however that goes.

You want something that looks nice? Buy the Auterra. But you aren't willing to shell out for it.

ISO will support ISO 9141 protocol cars year 96-07 which includes Asian(except Isuzu), European, Dodge-Chry 96-00 (except 98+ Concorde, Intrepid, LHS, 300M, 00+ Neon), Dodge Truck 96-2002, Diesel 98-2003, Ford Probe GT, Geo, Prizm, Vibe, Aveo, Tracker.

For the Elm scan. For each protocall, you have to buy another board with the correct connector. So to cover all obdII protocalls (sans CAN), the price is comparable to the others. ie... $180 for 3 boards that cover all obdII protocalls Not bad/good or otherwise. Same. And you still need the cables. Not hard to get or expensive but sort of a pain to have to gather. Plus having to find free software do download. I don't know if those free ones feature some maker's enhanced obdII features. ie.. ford offers exta diagnostic features. Nissan / Infiniti also have enhanced versions from what I read.
