I looked through the MEVI FAQ and didn't find it. Hopefully someone has it bookmarked...need to settle an argument.

which VTEC engine? If it was a dyno comparison it was probably me but I've done so many of them.

No, there was a long article, if I remember correctly, saying that Nissan actually came up with the idea before Honda. But it's been a while.

oh, that was the write-up I did on Nissan's NVCS system. I posted that here too but I won't be able to find it again until Sprint rebuilds the search tables (they got nuked during the drive crash I guess).

BUT......

I just happened to cross post that one at V6Performance.net

Nissan, not Honda, produced Japan's first variable valve timing equipped engine

I'm not sure if I linked the comments from some of the ORGers from here over there, but Alfa Romeo actually put some of the first VVT engines into production. So Nissan did do "Japan's" first VVT engine, but not the "world's" first. The VI is a variable intake manifold which isn't the same thing. VTEC and NVCS has to do with actual valve timing. Both of them do share the same purpose though, which is optimizing the volumetric efficiency of the engine over the widest range possible. Two different ways of accomplishing the same thing.

Hope that helps.

Honda is responsible for inventing variable LIFT valve timing which was rather revolutionary and is what made Honda famous. But they had nothing to do as far as "inventing" the general VVT concept technology. Some patents from the 70's point to GM, Toyota, and Mack trucks IIRC, and Alfa was the first to put it in a production car, I believe (working off foggy memory from research I did looooong ago).

Actually Vtec is NOTHING like a VI, Vtec changes the movement of the valves in the engine, VI only will direct air.

It accomplishes the same thing as an S-AFC. I'm not sure what else it could do on the Maxima, but tweaking timing and adjusting the rev limiter "may" be a possibility. Could probably get 10-15 whp/wtq worth of gains.
