custom maxima vs B&M>????

has anyone done any tests on these 2 STS? i was wondering, is the B&M STS really work 125? or should i go with the Custom Maxima's for only 70?

The CM shifter is actually the pacesetter STS.

i dished it out for B&M. I've always had their products in older muscle cars I've worked on, and I trust them. I also like having a shifter called a "ripper"

my B&M + MOMO combo

I love it, just my .02c

I test-shifted an SE-R with a B&M, and I loved the feel (identical unit to the Maxima one). The owner said that he had a pacesetter, and the B&M is leaps and bounds better. If the CustomMaxima and the PaceSetter ones are indeed the same, then I would recomment the B&M.

I have the B&M and my only dislike is how far forward it sits in 1st/3rd/5th.

If you bend the solid steel shaft, sure.... You'd need some pretty hefty shop tools to do that properly.

I started a thread last week about bending it, but nobody responded. I have the means to bend it, but I just don't know if its a good idea.

I meant that since the throw is adjustable, that would logically limit forward travel.

the B&M is not an adjustable STS. It replaces the entire shift assembly (probably an easier swap then the CM shifter.) Which is probably another reason why it's so much more expensive. You're buying a precision engineered piece of equipment from B&M, not a bent piece of metal with a plastic threaded ball that has to use your old stock shift assembly that you have to carefully take apart and re-use (I destroyed mine taking it out, dunno about the rest of you. I figured out the easy way just as I got it all the way out but messed it up pretty good beforehand.)

The CM has that threaded ball, that if you want you can trust with your hard shifts, that allows you to adjust the throw distance.

The B&M is "just" a 40% throw reduction. Fine by me

P.S. No need to "bang out" the heat shield to make room for the shifter when you reduce the throw too much with the adjustable.

By forward I mean when you're in 1st/3rd/5th your knuckles are practically against the center console. When in 2nd/4th/Rev the shifter sits about where neutral would be with a stock shifter.

Given the above post, I was mistaken.

It is odd that on the Maxima it is so far forward, because on Jason's SE-R, it was in the perfect location in all 6 positions.

What about the one from Courtesy Nissan?
http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchan...=FWDSS-SSK6087
This looks like just a replacement shaft like the pacesetter, just not adjustable.

that looks more like an entire replacement unit like the B&M.. not reusing any old parts

It fits sentras, altimas and maximas. Cheaper to mfg when it fits so many different applications. My guess is they made it fit the best they could for all of them and called it good enough.

Where can I buy the B&M STS and boots for the shifter and e-brake? I would prefer the e-brake boot be the same color as factory but I will live with black.

What color is your interior?

B&M can be bought at southwest autoworks.

If you have that ugly brown/tan e-brake color, it is damn near irreplicatable (if that's a word, dunno). When I do this, since both are kind of shot, I'm going with black leather with tan threading for my shift/e-brake boot needs from redline goods - http://www.redlinegoods.com/MaximaA32product.shtm

Exactly. I went with black and black, and I have no regrets. I can post a pic later to show you.

to anyone getting a B&M shifter:

during assembly of the base you have to put on a hefty retaning clip (about 99% of a circle with about a 1mm gap between ends, ends have a small lip with a little hole cut in them) designed to be opened with some sort of "retaining clip plier" as referred to in the B&M installation instructions...

i've never heard nor seen of one of these, and its a ***** to open that hefty clip without it. be forwarned you WILL messup your nice annodized finish (that you cant see anyways) trying to pop it on with multiple screw drivers or clamp it down all the way around with vice grips like i did.

you might want to hit up home depot or some place and ask about such a device while you wait for it to come in the mail.

i would imagine the tool looks like pliers with a point on each fork that seperate when it opens

You've never seen them? wierd. The set I have was bought at Napa and are very good quality. Most are crap and break easily.

Napa's website doesn't have any pics, but they look just like this.

BTW... The Tool Warehouse is awesome. Great prices.

For you guys with B&M's....I've had mine installed for about a year, and even with Amsoil tranny fluid, it's still difficult to get into 1st gear if I'm not at a complete stop. It helps if I rev up the engine a few hundred rpms, or if I let the clutch out, and try and get it into 1st again. Aside from some difficulty getting into 1st, and a little notchiness going into 2nd, the shifter is awesome. Going into all other gears is nice and short. Do you guys have problems similar to this? I wish I could drive a Maxima with a Pacesetter or something else so I know if it's supposed to be like this.

I've been told the notchiness is cured by draining and refilling with redline. Haven't done it yet though.

b&m, from what i've heard the only thing that people like more than the b&m is the stillen, but i honestly don't know if it's that big of a difference. i'm more than in love with my b&m, it's fun.

I can shift smoothly through all gears w/ my B&M (I had tranny fluid replaced at 50k.. im only at 63k now) so I guess my tranny is still in its virgin stages somewhat. But I dont have any problem getting into 1st below ~ 5-3mph I'd guestimate. Little stiff up around 5 but it will still go in

they're called snap rings, and you need snap ring pliers to install them.
