Road Noise

Road Noise
Just bought a 98 SE with 68K miles. Seems like there is excessive road noise. The tires have 34K miles but still have decent tread. Is the Maxima known to have a lot of road noise, is it the tires, or do the wheel bearings need to be re-packed?

The sound insulation isn't great, but it isn't bad except in the trunk. Dynamat is more for quieting reverberations, it's not exactly sound insulation. There are many options out there, but I would bet it's your tires. Tires make a huge difference in noise as they age, esp, crappy ones or defects like I had on my last set.

the 97-99 groups is better than the 95/96 years, but still no buick/cadilac quiet...it is a drivers car after all.
Anyway, tire tread may look good but feathering from poor alignment or overinflation can make lots of noise. some tread patterns or tire constructions are going to be more noisey than others too.
A bad wheel bearing can make a humm...not unheard of on these cars.
