Sticky Throttle
Sticky Throttle
For several months now, initial acceleration and deceleration have been jerky. It happens abruptly when I apply or let off throttle. Also, when I am cruising at about 20mph and I release the thottle, the car seems to slow down greatly until about 5mph, and then seems to slow at a smaller rate. These problems seem to happen less severly once the car warms up but still exists.
I have heard of people adjusting/tightening their throttle cables. Could this help? Any helpful ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

before playing with your cables, it can be as simple as a dirty throttle body.. right where the butterfly opens and closes.
Take off your intake, grab some $2 intake/carb cleaner and spray it in there and clean it off. After that, you should notice the car accelerating much more smoothly.
As a side note... be sure to secure the straw that connects to the cleaner can. I've read a couple stories where the straw flies out and into the throttle body... scary stuff.
good luck

guys a dirty throttle will do little to affect you idel UNLESS THERE IS A LARGE CARBON DEPOSIT ON THE PLATE!! if u pull the throttel from the engine bay and release it a couple of time all that crap gets broken up. u dont really need to spray anything inside cuz the tb is coated with special crap to allow it to stay clean in other words repell dirt. if anything check you fuel injectors for leaks and also check the fuel pressure regulator it has a lot to do with the way your car drives

BTW i don't think the tb is your problem anyway
hey i sure bout that carb cleaner is some serious corosive sheit, when u have some free time take some carb cleaner and spray it into a plastic cup (the one u drink beer from lol) and watch the bottom of the cup melt away in like under a minute, but thats besides the point, what im trying to say is the more u clean it with carb cleaner the faster its gonna get dirty again. i dunno why this is but it just is.
you get the same effect with spray paint in a foam cup.
anyways, it could be a sticky cable, but if you haven't cleaned out your TB, might as well now. I have this problem on my dad's corolla, never paid attention to it, but the last time I went to a mechanic i just casually mentioned it to him and he told me to just clean out the TB and it should be okay. I can only imagine the crap build up in there to make it stick.

and btw i drink my beer out of the can and carburator cleaners won't do anything to it
Yeah, I had this problem. At the time I didn't have any carburator cleaner, so I improvised and used a rag dipped in petrol. Worked well and it got rid of the sticky accelerator. It seems to be coming back though, so I may need to repeat sometime soon.

Thanks for the feedback. My computer has been down for a few days so I am just checking this thread now. FYI, the jerky throttle happened started after I cleaned the throttle body a few months ago. I fouled out the plugs in the process, and replaced they were replaced with bosch platinums. Wow do those plugs suck!
I recently put ngk coppers in and the car runs great, aside from this jerky throttle. Therefore, I don't think the throttle body is dirty again already. Any other ideas? Thanks
