Now the choice is what turbo kit to do, I've heard different things about different kits. For instance a smaller kit the turbo will spool quicker, but a bigger kit the turbo will spooler harder. I'd like some feedback on what you experienced owners have on which kit would be the best route to take with my setup. Thanks.
If you are going to turbo your car forget the cattman headers, and as for the ECU only get your REV limit raised. Put the turbo down close to the exhaust so when you realize that you need to get custom piping to actually use the turbo you can get the bigger turbo and it will spool up much quicker leaving you with little turbo lag, than if you were to put it above the engine.

Do yourself a favor and follow these two easy steps:
1. Educate yourself
2. Ask questions

You'll save LOTS of money (buying a ypipe if you are planning to turbo...) and people won't joke on you constantly. Go look through the turbo/sc forums, read what other experiences have been with different sized turbos. Figure out what hp you want, and then decide if you need a built motor to get there.

If you are going to turbo talk to Nigel aka Turbo97SE .. he is working on a standalone unit that may help you with the whole ECU and yadda yadda ...

Just be glad I did not catch it. You have to play by the rules.

Thanks for the feedback it was all very helpful. I'd like to push 400whp lol, but that might be a tad extreme? Not sure. Still educating myself with the turbo stuff, that's why I'm over @ maximaracing.org forums. But again, your insights were very helpful, thank you all.

Feel free to come into the SC/Turbo forum to ask all the questions you need.

But, before you ask any questions, read the stickies

Bags thanks for the invite, I'll do that, and I'll be sure to read the stickies prior to asking questions.

SR20DEN 3.5 engine I don't want, it would be very costly. And a pain. I'm trying to get my car back soon, not months down the line.

You dumba$$... the SR20 motor series are all 2 litre engines...

the 3.5 litre your talking about is a VQ35 series...

And yes it is possible to swap it in when you go thrue the hassle of a lot of wireing, and swap the ECU together with the engine itself.

However I'm following a project here on the ORG that only uses the bottom end of a VQ35DE and all the other stuff from the VQ30DE. It gives an insane compression, putting a VQ30DE head on a VQ35DE bottom end...

No it gives very good compression but on cylinder heads and an intake manifold that does NOT flow as well.

Well i know this thread is old however i inquire about building the VQ in a maxima? Where i can go about getting parts for the bottom end and everything. I am trying to do some home work questions (this is the only thread i pull up about this) are the way to get things done. for those who wanna flame go ahead. But i prefer good answers. I havent bought a maxima but i'm looking 95-99, (kinda torn between this car and a s14 so its up in the air). I do wanna boost the car i love turbo. So if someone is willing to give me some low down on it all it would be great. Oh and the maxima that i found around me for a good deal has almost 180K on it so i know the motor will need to be replaced or rebuilt. Thanks for all your help.

Yes i did i understand that the stock motor is able to support over 400hp; however, i'm going to either have to buy another motor or rebuild the current on in the car if i go after it. Now if i rebuild it rather go for a bulletproof motor and cryo the tranny as well.

Anything can be done with time and money. If you seriously wanna build it you can try a machine shop, maybe one that makes custom parts for muscle cars. They should be able to at least PP everything, a good one should be able to make you custom pistons/rods, I am however not talking from experience, I am just saying anything is possible, but how much are you willing to spend on the engine when a 3.5 swap will probably be less of a headache. And with the 350z using this engine, internals should be easier to get. SO, get 3.5 and build that, thats my opinion

Well you guys say its better to swap a 3.5 (same as the 350z) motor but why? I have a buddy here that has a twin 350z and he has blown it up twice running a greddy kit and boosting 16psi. I always thought the 3.0 was built right and strong. If i'm under the wrong impression please inforum me. Now i heard the 3.5 was better if it was n/a kinda like the b15 se-r's

I mean realistic i wanna spend like 8,000 into the motor build and boosting i would like to get some where in the area of 350-400hp for now till i feel the need to exceed that. I wanna run mid 12s and the highest time of low 13s. Now i know the stock motor can do it but swapping it is my issue. short on tools w/ the swap and the knowledge of this motor. I've heard its a b*tch to swap another 3.0 in it. I'd like to aquire a low mileaged 3.0 and swap it in since it handle the power and than build it. Thats honestly what i'll do due to the fact of my finances being lower than needed to do the build.

Now my other question is i'm still new to the VQ scene i'm used to the SR20 scene (had a 1997 200sx se-r w/ a gtir motor in it). But i notice alot of guys running the PFI kit. Still trying to look around and get feed back on it, but to those that have run it or still do what do you think about it all and what is the max boost your putting out of it? I sincerly dont wish to pop a motor especially with the knowledge of the limited source of aftermarket bottom end parts for the engine. I hope you can assist.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhh.................

Step 1. Buy a maxima
Step 2. Donate
Step 3. Search
Step 4. Be enlightened
...8000 dollars into the motor and a turbo? In a maxima? WHY??

You know what, if I were you I'd just get that S14, swap in either an RB25DET, VQ35DE, or even be unique, grab a SR20VET.

If the VQ35DE was inferior, it wouldn't be Nismo's new favorite motor. They'd have just stuck with the RB.

Well working on step one donate how and how much. i have no problem searching so relax. I'm just stating what results i've seen due to my buddy experience. 8,000 isnt just for the motor. It would be for rims, kit, new or built motor, the fun stuff. The final reason i'm getting a Max rather than a S14 is due to having a family. I dont wanna have to cram a car seat in the back of a S14 but still wanna have a fast car. I hope you can assist more with my questions. Thanks for the time and answers. Like i've stated before i had a 200sx (FWD) w/ a GTIR motor (SR20DET) loved it but it was wrecked and it was small to be doing the car seat so i'm stepping up to get a bigger car and make it fast as well. I love speed but i want handling and luxary.
