3.5 bottom end with 3.0 heads and jwt cams in and running!

This morning i pulled the ole 3.0 after dynoing last week for baseline numbers. I then swapped all the sensors and intake manifold onto my 3.5 bottom end with 3.0 heads (vq30det) and jwt cams, obx headers, light weight flywheel, udp(on car prior too swap) and exhaust(on car prior too swap). well turnout is awesome it is very fast need to do some tuning though but will at least have 1/4 mile times soon.

so you used a 3.5 lower end(whole block) or just 3.5 internals on 3.0 block

Tilleys99,

Were any mod's needed for the heads to fit correctly. Is the cylinder bore of the VQ35 block the same diameter as the VQ30? If not, how were you able to accomodate for the squish in the combustion chamber. I'm assuming the area on the VQ30 heads were either close enough or you had to open up the chamber on the heads slightly. Or were they just a perfect match? What CR do you think this combination is producing? Anyways, congrats on the project I'm glad to see another person on here doing some imaginative things.

What intake manifold did you use and would the US manifold work on the DET heads?

Another question I have is about the timing. Were there any issues getting the crank & the cam's to line up properly & did you have to modifiy the timing chain set up at all. I'm assuming the tentioner must of had enough adjustment to take up or allow for any slack?

Oh i forgot to say i put this in my girls car! but my car will be done in the next week probably. The DET heads supposedly have better springs so I threw them in, the cams are JWT. Last night I was holding in 2nd while my buddy in his 300zx (90) NA with some mods was in 1st then 2nd then third and he still couldnt pull ahead of me

Great job. Do you think you can post a write up? I'm sure plenty of people would attemp to do it, if you could post something similar to 5spd conversion instructions.

Hey tilley the obx headers fit? A 3.0 guy couldn't get it too fit. Have you had any problems from the higher compression with the 3.0 heads?

obx headers suck you need to cut the brackets on the motor that go to the mount. No race fuel needed and no problems yet but I am installing a a/f gauge today just to see if its running proper.

So you put this in your girl's car not your car, that means this is an NA motor not a turbo motor right?

This is incredable! Do VQ30DET heads have to be used? is there something special about those heads that the U.S. heads don't have, other than the stronger valve springs?

OK, cool. I have been waiting to see if someone would actually get this up and running, I have a VQ30 engine sitting in my garage so now I have to get the 3.5 bottom and put em together. Was there any technical wiring that I will run into. I know the only sensor is the in the shortblock is the cranck sensor, other than that is it just a bolt on project?

Wow this is so cool. Any chance there will ever be a writeup? This was basically bolt on correct? Not all the fabrication that was evidently involved in krismax's 00-01 VI?

So what parts from the 3.5 exactly did you use? I'd probably never actually do this, but it is something to think about. I can't get over how cool this is. Any idea on what kind of improvement this has given just from a butt dyno point of view?

Quick Reply: 3.5 bottom end with 3.0 heads and jwt cams in and running!
