95-96 Red/Clear tails on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33716

Not only do they look good, they also say how they made them. They got full clear tail lights and painted the bottom half red. Much easier then trying to take out the yellow lens and making it clear. Hope someone wins and perhaps learns how to make more for you guys with 95-96's.

FYI, that's not a secret. The hard part is that the all-clear lights aren't made anymore.

The only difference as far as I can tell is that there is a crease in the trunk lid on 95-96 Maxima's that leads into the tail lights that does not exist in 97-99 Maxima's. The general shape of the light looks the same to me. Isn't it possible to get a newer trunk lid from a 97-99 and then just use the red/clears from a 97-99 on a 95-96 ??

Yep. But with buying the parts then painting the trunk you are back in the $300-400 range that you would be with buying 1995 red/clears.

Okay, so let me get this straight you fork over $300! so you don't have amber tails, but the red doesn't match your inner trunk lights (not supplied on this ebay ad) so you have clears with non matching red tails thats looks like slightly less crap than the ambers for $300! LOL

If their done right, they do match. Thats what makes them so rare and $$$
getting a nice set that mathces is what made the DavidL versions so popular.

Hey man, nothing on that ad says it will match your factory trunk tails!

Im not selling them.
Im just stating that they can be made to match. I have seen a set in person.

Or even easier, just get the 97-99 red/clears and put them on a 95-96 regardless of the crease ?? I don't think it'll look bad at all and if you needed to, just fill in the small gap with some clear or black silicone. No ?

Yes you're right they can be made to match but I think @ $300, I'd want to be done at that, not more mods to make the match, might as well do it yourself via other methods available out there and save a ton of cash. It would be different if he was supplying matching trunk lights. I'd hate for anyone to spend that kind of cash especially a felow org member for a visual thing and it still not be 100%! You know what I mean?

95 - 96 Backpiece

+

The front clear housing from 95-96 Altezzas

+

Paint the bottom portion transparent red, and fit acrylic material on the top

this would not work because in 95-96 tails, the clear is on top, whereas the clear is on bottom for 97-99 tails.

95-96 Red/Clear Tails

not bloody likely!

i explained in another post in the gd forum that the stock lights have a black border around the top and side that is part of the housing itself, whereas the altezzas make up the entire lense itself and there is no border...so in order to fit an altezza face on a stock housing, you'd need to do some precise trimming to get it to fit in there. it can be done, but i doubt it would honestly look right in the end unless you're a very good craftsman. goodluck to anyone that tries but it seems everyone is all talk because nobody has yet.

I know the clear portions are inverted on 95-96 vs. 97-99 but if push comes to shove, wouldn't this be better than nothing ?

No, this has never been better than anything to people on the .org, trust me. the better than nothing fix currently has to be, what I am to attempt tonight, which is to red out the amber part of your lights, their are two common means of doing this, I am going with the one that makes more sense to me, testors candy apple red translucent paint, 4 coats, then 2 coats of clear coat.

Cost 6 bucks for the paint at Wally world.

Not sure if a "certified autobody" shop can beat DavidL's red clears, but contrary to perception, even DavidL's don't match up perfectly. The white portion looks noticeably frosted compared to the stock side, after a while the red fades, and around the borders of the red, you can notice imperfections. To everyone else, but the owner, they may as well be factory quality though.

One important thing about DavidL red/clears is that he OPENED all the lenses and painted them from the inside. If this body shop just spray painted the outside with "transparent paint", that is definitely NOT equivalent. Any outside paint subject to the elements and will deteriorate accordingly. If you are bidding, find out first.

Nice looking car man. I did the smoked tails mod and "oversmoked" the rear lights so now I need to light them up a bit with Goo Gone or whatever it's called. Yours look perfect.

btw, did you cut down your stock shifter?

He didn't win them he was only the high bidder because the reserve wasn't met so they'll probably come up again! I'm guessing his reserve was $250 but who knows???

Yeah, I like the smoked tails look too. Hey klim, do your tails still appear black in sunlight or can you see the orange? I might have done mine a little too light on the outsides.
