97-99 red/clear mod question?

ok so i went to home depot and got that florecent light cover stuff and everything is ready to go. is there anything that i should watch out for in doing this mod? anything hard to it or is it basically like the instructions say and thats that. if its easy and no problems then why do 97-99 people buy these insted of taking the time to just make them? -ryan

just be careful and take your time and nothing should go wrong.pretty easy to do,if you can do the AE headlight mod you can do this one.

people buy the red/clears cuz it looks a little nicer (only up close).you dont see any little ripples in it like you do with homemade ones.I have homemade ones, but I only did the outter sections,so it looks a little funny,so i'm probably gonna buy some on ebay or sumthin for $100.

good luck with it!

if you get it started coming off and it seems stuck, its because the corner where it tapers down to a point (towards the outside of the car in the lower corner) there is a little nub that slips into the housing, that has to go away from the housing, cant just pull it straight off of it. so start on the other side and work your way down there and just push that end off. easy as pie!)

and use a dremel!! cut your insert too big, and using a heat gun to make sure the insert doesnt break warm it up so you can easily bend it into place. use a heavy grit sandpaper to make short work of fitting it into place. it takes down the edges really quickly so be careful!

yes I used the oven myself, i suggest this method.

i cant remember the numbers, you should definitely find one of the previous posts somewhere about it .. i *THINK* its like 10-12 minutes at 200*F.

but having a heatgun handy would be good for putting in the inserts (i guess even a hairdryer would work for heating up the acrylic ... just needs to be pretty warm so it doesnt shatter)

yea a handgun would be useful if you were going to steal someone elses tail lights haha but yea.. read tomservo291's post about the lil corner part. i wish i knew about that first because i cracked one of my corner piece when i did it for the first time w/o knowing. another tip would be once you have taken the lens part, put a piece of computer paper on the inside where the orange is and with a pencil, trace around on the inside so you can get a little cut out of the shape. take your time on cutting the arcylic piece because it shatters easily.. you'll see when you try it. all in all.. easy mod, just time consuming.

one last thing.. do the inner trunk piece as well so it'll match!

Just my 2cents... Id make sure that the glue is completly melted before you start to pull, and pull VERY slowly,.. i made the mistake of pulling a bit too hard too fast and cracked it .. Other than that, the oven works fine, don't waste your money on a gun (although im sure it would be helpful) and also if you have a Dremel or some other tool like one, use it to cut the acrylic.... it makes it a whole lot easier, and quicker too.
