Code 1008 - Evap Can. Purge Volume Solenoid - Resolved
Just bought a '95 Maxima that is overall in great shape, low miles, but after driving it home, the Check Engine Light came on.
Reading the codes shows it is a 1008, Evaporative Cannister Purge Volume Control Solenoid Valve sending an improper signal to the ECU.
From the description in the sticky thread above that ids the codes, it sounds like it might well be a loose wire, blown fuse, or other wiring issue, and at worst, the valve itself is easy to get to, easy to test, and not very expensive to replace.
Anyone had this problem? Is that right that it is a cheap fix if replacement is the call?
And what is the implication of running without the "purge volume control valve solenoid" functioning? Any damage caused, performance hit, air polluted?
Any info appreciated; I want to go back to the dealer as well armed as possible.
Readout also showed a bad knock sensor, but the many threads on that have filled me in, I think: doesn't trigger CEL by itself, doesn't hurt engine life, does hurt performance, few hundred $ to have fixed (the job is beyond what I'd do at home). I'll let that one slide for a while.

For what it's worth if you ever get this code yourself, the response from the dealer is that the valve solenoid probably does need to be replaced, but it is cheap: a $45 part, and labor estimated to be under $40 (1/2 hr or less).
Anyone with some tinkering skills should be able to do it themselves. In my case, it's on a 50% warranty with the dealer and I'm way busy with work and travel right now, so I'm willing to spend forty bucks to let them take care of it.

i litterally just changed mine just now, took me less than 5min to swap them out. Now all i have to do is reset the check engine light. Oh and the part costs $32 at Nissan.
To remove the part look behind your rear tire on the driver side and youll see a small plastic flap help in with 2 plastic clips. Push in the middle of the clip and pop it out, the flap will drop revealing the part. Unplug the harness, pop the hose off it and remove the x2 10mm bolts holding it in. Installation is reverse procedure
goodluck,

Thanks, ny96, even easier than I thought. I'll still have the dealer (the lot where I bought it I mean, not Nissan) do this one since with their 50% coverage it's still about the same price as if I did it myself, but should it come up again that's a snap.
Plus it was worth it just to hear their secretary's surprise when I called to tell them not just that the CEL was on, but that I had the computer readout on the problem. Not many people do that, I guess...
