Those with custom exhausts

I was considering putting together an exhaust and was wondering the parts i needed. Cat backs only have b-pipes and mufflers rite? And axle backs only have mufflers rite? So pretty much all i would need to do is find a b-pipe and muffler section? I am considering a magnaflow muffler. How is your setup and any suggestions?

I've got just a Magnaflow muffler.......nothing special. You dont need much more if you're not boosted. Y pipe, cat, b pipe of course will open it up and give you like 7 HP......but why spend the money on it?

What do you want? Sound/performance/looks?

Here is my setup:
1. Wsp y-pipe
2. stock cat
3. stock resonator
4. Custon 2.5" b-pipe
5. 5th gen muffler.

Total, it prolly gave me somewhere between 15 and 20hp.
I like the power especially, but the sound is good too. There is not much sound at all.

Y-pipe is known to give 18 hp at the wheels...check it out.

http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/519

7 hp out of the last two exhaust mods...maybe, but a y Pipe is a great mod.

Not likely that you would get 18 wheel hp on a y-pipe. I would say, possibly at the crank, but not at the wheels.
The others don't yield more than 5-6hp....at the crank.

Don't try to rig up your own exhaust system. It may seem like a good idea in the beginning but you'll quickly realize that you won't actually save any money. Unless you get very lucky the first time, the setup will not sound how you want it to and you will have to take a trip back to the exhaust shop to have them weld in a larger or smaller resonator(Whichever you think is warranted) Greddy, Cattman, OBX, Apexi have done that trial and error BS for you. Thats why their product cost that much. They have spent tons R&D'ing the sound and performance of a catback on a particular car.

Brudaddy, you can't have a 2.5" catback if you're using the stock resonator seeing as the stocker is a 2.25" unit. It may seem like 2.5 but really the inner diameter is 2.25".

Still, if the horsepower is measured at the flywheel, then calculating 15% drivetrain loss, it should still put down no less than 12 hp at the wheels. This gain was also down in combination with a cone air filter, but note: motorvate's car was dynoed with the filter only and with the y-pipe/filter combo.

thanks for your thoughts. i already have a warpspeed y. the reason im lookin for a new exhaust is that my stock one is rusting out. by next spring i will probably have a hole or two in the b-pipe and muffler and the cat smells like its been out. so i thought this would be a great time to upgrade. just looking for a little more power with a sound comparable to 350s. a little louder and depper, but not anything extreme.

Broaner, I understand that the stock resonator is not larger than 2.25".
However, that is only about a foot long and therefore I don't consider it that much of a hinderance. Especially since it is straight and not in a bend.

Your in luck. Yesterday at Super Tuning Performance in Van Nuys, CA I had my Greddy SP2 ful catback installed. Yes, its the 95-96 model and I have a 98. I am pleased to report that NO fitment issues resulted and it bolted on perfectly using stock gaskets, bolts, and flanges. I thought the muffler was gonna be a little short due to the shorter 95-96 bumper, but to my surprise, the Greddy SP2 fits the 98 bumper PERFECTLY. The muffler tip also fills almost the whole stock muffler whole-cut in the bumper but doesn't rub. There's about 1 1/2 cm clearance around the tip. I am currently now running Place Racing CAI, Warpspeed alum. steel y-pipe, and Greddy SP2. This setup sounds awesome. U guys have to hear this. At idle, you cant even tell I have an exhaust. Its probably a note above the rumble you get w/ adding a y-pipe w/ stock exhaust. At the normal cruising range its deep and rumbles beautifully. At WOT, it screams like a *****. I definitely feel the power gains. People say exhaust wont make a difference, but w/ full exhaust from the header back, coupled w/ cai, you will feel the difference. Very pleased with Greddy. You get what u pay for. Do it right once.

Word SMOKEYMOUTAIN.

Brudaddy, your missing the point bud. Exhaust is only as good as the most resrictive point. It wouldn't matter if your whole header back was 4", the gases still have to travel through that 2.25" section. IMO, you have no right to say you have a "2.5" custom catback."

I have 2.75" from the cat back, to a 120 mm Apex N-1 Turbo Muffler, with a passthrough cat ( looks like a cat but really is just a pipe surrounded by what looks like a cat and a budget y-pipe.

Seriously, do you have any pics???

I am getting either an SP1 or SP2 next month... the only factor making me question the SP2 was fitment.

Okay, dude. I bet it would not be .5hp difference from someone with a "Broaner-approved" exhaust system that is 2.5" all the way.
I can drive alongside anyone with my equivilent mods and probably beat them...with hundreds of dollars saved in my pocket.

its good to here that the greddy sp2 can fit on a 97-99, even though its made for 95-96, i dont feel like buying a $500 exhaust and then paying like over $200 to modify it, one question, what about the extra o2 sensor that 97-99's have?

if anybody would like to argue about if a y pipe puts power to the wheels then look no further im living proof it makes one heck of a differnce...example before the y pipe i ran a 16.2 consistantly after y pipe i run a 15.6 again consistantly add it up over a half second differnce thats more than 7 hp i would think. and .6 faster in the QM who else has had that big of a gain??? its prolly just because i have nealoc187's old y pipe o yea and i now sqweel into 2nd gear everytime ...and im auto

Brudaddy, I didn't say that I had 2.5". I said that you are wrong when you say you have a 2.5" system. I didn't mention anything about difference in power. I know that difference is negligable which is why I'm running stock diameter.

Joosdawg, the only reason you squeal into gear is because you need a tranny flush.

if you plan to upgrade your exhaust then stick with the same manufacurer for the whole system , and replace the whole system from y-pipe to free air. Mixing and matchins is a sure way to reduce on you possible gains. I got a full system from warpspeed and love it. It fairly quite too (for those who are married will understand the last comment).

Your professional drop resistor huh. As in VB? If thats the case I have no comment but I know that the tires shouldn't chirp stock or DR'ed. Mine used to chirp when I first did my DR but then I flushed it and they stick like glue. Also, it doesn't help that when I first DR'ed I was on stock tires.
