alternator whines really loud

so my friend has wrecked his maxima twice now (1997). I think in the last one, after getting things repaired, he noticed a really lound whining sound. I am sure it is his alternator as it gets louder when u accelerate (either parked, neutral, or driving).

I told him a year and a half ago his alternator is going to explode and he'll be sorry then lol. BUT, it still whines and hasn't noticed any other problem. I'd think if it's a bad alternator, it would have crapped out on him now.

Could there be a ground problem? His speakers whine too and his headunit and speakers seem properly grounded. (aftermarket)

Anyone have any suggestions? Anything specific to look for?

thanks

btw- he ran his car through nissan and they said he wans't elidgible for the recall.

Bad bearings can cause the noise and the alt still function properly.

I bought this car in March. The alternator went out in April (about 2-3 weeks after putting in subwoofer).

The new nissan alternator started whining within a few days, but no problems after 6 months. It whines, but I can't hear it with the stereo on at normal volume.

Oh, and if I disconnect the power cable to the sub amp, it quits whining.
