Just curious if there is a real difference between OEM and 300zx brakes in therms of stopping time....

I think the stopping distance is the same but u will get less fade with the 300zx calipers.

I got the Wilwood kit and I'd say the same holds true for it... just less fade. The other thing I noticed which I really appreciate is when you're braking from say 80-0 or 100-0, the brakes feel 100% solid. When I drive my pop's 95 the stock brakes feel weak and do not inspire confidence.

Without the proper timing equipment, like Car & Driver would use, it would be really hard to be accurate.

I did not notice much diff in the stopping distance.... but as I30tmikeD said with out proper equiptment, you wouldn't notice 2-5ft diff..... fade resistance is better and the pedal feel is better.... I'm not sure that it is worth it .... to do the conversion unless you can get the parts for free .... by the time you buy all the parts and have the machine work done .... then f around with the install.... you could almost buy a kit designed for the car.... however if you don't drive the car hard enough to fade the stock set up...... upgrading is a waste....my 2cents....later

so what is the point of a BBK, I get no fade with my axxis ultimates and brembo slotted rotors....why would I spend any money on a BBK if it doesn't stop shorter?LOL

Here's the answer: Motor Trend tested the Stillen SMX with the 300ZX brake kit in '96 and the car stopped from 60-0 in 111ft.

It does make a difference.

I think you would notice a larger difference if you also got a rear brake kit also. It's a matter of balancing things out between the front and rear. I say this because I recently read an article in Boost magazine about the delicate balance with brakes, and that you could potentially INCREASE the stopping distance with a front BBK alone. This depends a lot on the car and the BBK though.

I have noticed a significant difference between the two brake kits, but I have not really timed it. I also switched to Green Stuff pads, and it is night and day between the two. I can also say that they have already saved my a$$ from running into another car that wrecked in front of me. I know I would have hit him with the old brakes. If you are ready to change your wheels or get spacers, we can do this.

I think it largely has to do with weight balance...the maxima being a front wheel drive car with the engine in the front as well, a lot of our weight is in the front, so a larger rear brake kit is not as necessary...in either case, I have never been in a maxima with a BBK so I don't know how much of a difference it makes...I personally only have steel brake lines, slotted rotors, and axxis ultimate pads, so I have no fade whatsoever compared to my stock brakes, however, I would like to stop a lot shorter if at all possible...

how many ft. does it take for our cars stock to stop from 60-0??? does anyone remember the old magazine articles?
