I have a 1996 automatic Max. When I put the car in reverse it stalls sometimes and sometimes when I put the car in reverse it doesn't stall right away but as soon as I give it gas it stalls. What could it be???????? Please help..

Yeah the car will shut off and only in reverse. If I give it gas it will puut and then shut off. Weird. There is no "check engine" lite on either.

sorry to say it, but i think that this is a problem worthy of the stealership, but remember, a new tranny bought not from the dealer goes for about 900, so work around that price

I don't think it's a transmission problem cause it doesn't do it in the foward gears and it's intermittent. I'm thinking more of a sensor, but without a "check engine" lite I can't pull a code. Has this problem happened to anyone else?

Would the MAF or an idle control valve cause this?

Nope the maf sensor / idle control would do it in foward too !
I've checked the service manual but unfortunately there are many things that can cause this and its too long to explain, the first thing to check is the fluid level and color/texture after that you have to go inside the tranny to verify.
hope this help

Post your question here: http://forums.motorvate.ca/viewforum.php?f=5 before you go to the stealership. Frank is awesome.

I had that happen to me ONCE like a year ago, has never happend again, since then I have gave the car a complete tuneup and cleaned my TB.. Never has turned off.. Might wanna try some basic things, it happend when I put it in reverse as well..

Not sure if anything I did fixed it or not.

Today when I was driving everything was fine. I've done all the basic maintenance items. Any other suggestions?
