Upgraded headlight question

I wanted to know what would be better, Hi wattage 9004 bulbs with high the new harnesses, or regular 9007 bulbs? I also wanted to know where I could get the 9004 to 9007 headlight harness?

Thanks

in my experiance the 80/100 watt 9004 were not brighter than stock. Could have been the bulbs, they were cheepies and came with the car. So when I compared the over watt 9004 to stock 9007 i found the 9007 was brighter.

Do you know where I would be able to get the 9004-9007 conversion harness or do I have to make that myself? I have access to all the sockets so that would be no problem.

When ran 80/100 watt 9004 bulbs, I found that they were much brighter than stock...a little brighter and it would've been close to my friend's 03 max hids. But they did put a lot of strain on the engine. You could hear it when I turned the lights on.

I think you mean the alternator. If those bulbs were coated in blue I bet they put out less lumens than the stock bulbs. The human eye is more sensetive to colors higher on the kelvin scale... basically they appear brighter when you look right into the headlight housings but light on the road sucks. In terms of color I'm sure they were close to the factory HIDs, but rest assured, they were putting out around 1/3 the light.

Yeh it was probrably the alternator. As for the light output however, I compared that of the bulbs next to the HIDs on the road (looking from the driver's view).

f550maranello2: I agree. I had an upgraded harness kit but stopped using it after one of my bulbs blew.

I already did one light, I can already tell there is a huge difference...Its simple, I would definately recommend this to everybody without HID's. All I did was just cut the wires, swap the low and ground...a little bit of solder and its done. I will post pics in about 30 min!

i thought another problem with this mod was the fitment of the 9007 bulb into the 9004 housing?

You have to file two tabs away, but the 9004 bulb still fits the hole fine. There are 3 tabs, one at 12 o'clock, 4 and 8. You want to file away the 4 and 8, and keep the 12. Ohh yeah, my digital camera's batteries are dead, so I will have pics up tomorrow night. Anyway I went out for a drive for like 10 minutes, I cannot even begin to say how much of a difference it made, It lights up the streets on both sides so well, the left side of the street is lights up like I had the 9004 bulbs in. Its a night and day difference!!!! the whole thing took me about 30 minutes to do...thats without me having all the tools right in front of me, I had to go find them.

hehehe. Advance Auto parts, yea i remember those pinko-cummies, lol. I put up with so much crap for the conversion from Discount Auto to Advance Auto that I would "compensate" myself for the pain and suffering, lol. Right when I got laid off (nothing to do with the compensation, lol), the week after I found out they were going to start carrying Sylvania, including SilverStars. I though "@#$%, why didn't they lay me off after! lol
I got the APC 9004 super whites (regular wattage ones). They're not all that, but they are an improvement over the old Phillips that were in the car, and they still light up yellowish white, but brighter. The higher wattage APCs have a thick blue coat on the bulb, ew. I'll be doing the 9007 conversion, most likely with Sylvania XtraVision, unless I could have one of my old buddies hook me up with SilverStars.
Let me ask you, do I HAVE to make/ buy a new wiring harness for 9007? can't i just run my 9004 harness by just switching the ground and low?

check the sig... i had silverstars as well, but they were yellow compared to the polargs... SO... i sold out for some nokyas

looks much better IMHO, but i plan on replacing the entire wiring for all my lights (heads, fogs, clearance, bumper)... i dont want to rely on stock wiring for my 100/120 watts from heads & fogs... i am scared to turn them on, but i have heard others who ran them for months and had no overheating what-so-ever...

anyone you ask will say silverstars are better in most conditions because of the hue... yellow is supposed to shine through rain better with better vision... unfortunately they last about 6 months...

nokyas... well they are a much brighter white to me... and personally, i wouldn't go back for anything... except a burnt harness of course!

i already did the 9007 conversion, and am running 9007 arctic white stage II's... they are the same as the 9004 so it doesnt matter... but this way i can fall back on 9007s incase anything happens....

i have the fogs done too... in the daylight, your heads will look blue, the clearance & bumpers (polarg) will look whitish, but the nokya fogs will look rather whitish yellow...

they look a lot more compatable at night, as you can see in the pic...

I just completed the 9007 conversion today using the write-up. Went without probs, except now I have some crap in my lights from the nubs I hd to cut off. Anyway it's not too bad.

9007 are so much better than the 9004's. I cannot even begin to explain.

Couple questions though, does anybody else's Maxima have a slight whine to it at idle when you turn your lights on? Also, the headlights seem to dim ever so slightly when I mess with 2 or more power windows at the same time.

I'm running standard 65/55 9007 bulbs, so nothing special there. Does the extra 10 watts really put that much strain on our electrical system?

Also, is this a safe mod for our cars? Has anyone melted a harness or continuously burnt their bulbs???
