Update Guys.. Never thought of this..

Kinda long but please bear with me.

Ok this is a update about the problem I am having which I talk about in this tread http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=338654.

Today I took my car to my machanic to do a full day analysis of where that "whining or vibrating" sound was coming from. Well he had the car for most of the day then called me to come over so I did. When I got there he had taken apart my backseat. He told me to put his stethascope on and listen to the fuel pump which is under the backseat. Meanwhile he was pushing the gas a little. Through the stethascope on the fuel pump you could hear the sound clearly. I was like "wow, i did not even think about the fuel pump". He then took me to the front of the car under the hood where i would never hear any sounds but I would when inside the car. I put the stethascope back on and he put it on the fuel filter. Same sound!! He believes that the fuel pump is making the sound and the pipes under the car are making it sound like it is from the front because they are bringing the vibration forward.

I could not believe I heard it from the fuel pump, never even thought of it. What do you guys think? Does it sound like I am gonna need a new fuel pump? After hearing this would you assume it was surely that? I hear they cost a lot of money but hopefully after my warrenty dude hears it on monday he will do it free..

Thanks guys for all ur help and advice.

My machanic had it on the lift first and tried tracking the sound I think. So then he went to the fuel pump. He says it is traveling through the pipes thats why it sounds like it is in the front and near my pedals where i sometimes have vibration because the fuel filter is close to there.

Yeah as long as you heard it with your own ears.. anyways you could be able to tell if its coming from the alt or the tensionor by using the stethoscope over there.. If there not making noise and you heard the fuel pump yourself then go for it =)

$140

and $239 at autozone.. apparantly they have 2.

i know someone told you already but alternator do make a whining noise before it dies some do it for a week or so and the it goes bad some last for a few weeks even a months or so and until it finally dies

belt tensioner make same noise too

and another thing is trannys make a whining noise when theres something wrong with them, at least my 95 protege did that and tranny when bad after a few months

a good way to check is to take drive belt out and start engine for a few seconds if theres is no noise then find a smaller belt so you don't drive the alt just the a/c ,p/s pump etc.. if noise is gone then replace or ebuild alt if noise is still present then replces tensioner

I think I;m experiencing the same sound you're describing, when I open the hood I don't hear it but when I'm in the cabin I do. And I actually feel in the brake pedal. It usually goes after 5-10 min of driving. If you heard it with your own ears, the same sound, I would change the fuel pump. Let us know the results

lol it's not your alternator

Fuel pumps whine. Anyone here with walbro or other high pressure pump will attest to that.

NYCMaxima97, it does sound like you have the same problem. Check your fuel pump out. How long have you been hearing the sound? I ask becasuse it seems to get worse I used to hear it like you did 5-10 mins at first start up.

I am gonna change the fuel pump ASAP. I will update you guys on what happenes.

however i just read this.
'Alleged fuel pump failures can often be traced to a faulty fuel pressure regulator instead of (or in addition to) the pump itself. To avoid unnecessary warranty returns and comebacks, Seller strongly recommends testing (and, if in doubt, replacing) the fuel pressure regulator before considering the diagnosis of a faulty fuel pump to be complete and correct".

hmmm did not think of this..
