When I installed an aftermarket single-DIN HU, I centered it and recessed it in the middle of the double-DIN opening and fabricated a trim panel to go around it that fits flush with the face of the HU.

Paint.

Read the mod-FAQ for a write-up.

I'm still building the system. Lots of custom fabrication. It's taking longer than I thunk it would. I'll post pics when I complete the system. Soon.

The in-dash storage compartments are worthless to me. That's why I decided to just make something pretty and not put an ugly opening into the extra space. I'm using the storage space at the bottom for a panel of switches. If I had boost, I'd put gauges under the HU.

I put a 1/2 DIN Clarion center channel speaker under my DIN Kenwood DVD player for 5.1 surround sound. It looks sweet and I still have enough room for LEDs and meters for future upgrades....look at my homepage for pics....

I left the Bose unit in there and I have my motorized Sony receiver in the bottom with the motorized face. When closed it is sometimes difficult to tell if it's even there! Heres some pics:

I did the same with my stock headunit to ward off theives. No one will think you have a system with a stock HU.

Another option, especially if you have a broken Blows Audio HU, is to cut the face off of the stock HU and fix it so you can pop it into the cutout, over the aftermarket HU when you leave your car. Then it will look like your system is stock.
