What spark plugs do you run?

What are good spark plug choices for a '97? Any clearly superior choices?

I understand platinum is a must, right?

Platinum is not a must, they last longer that is all. Copper is much cheaper and works as well, just change them more often. Every 30,000 versus 75,000+ for platinum.

NGK brand plugs are a must...platinum vs. copper depends on budget and willingness to change plugs more frequently.

Running colder plugs is what FI guys normally do for a colder spark.

I run NGK Plats.

Yes NGK coppers are 1 step colder, they're what the boosted and spraying guys are using.

I'm using coppers.

I am running NKG platinums as well. There have been many people here who have had problems when running spark plugs other than the OEM ones (NGK), so just stick with those.

I'm running NGK coppers. 30k is long enough before I change them. Besides, I don't want any seized plugs messing up my block.

My plugs came out pretty easily at 120k. When I installed my new platinums I used antiseize on them. I guess I'll find out in another 40k if I will have any issues.

I was checking the manual and it didn't show a gap for the plugs...does anyone know what gap to use or what gap do you use?

Nowhere in the stickies does anyone ever mention the gap coppers should be set to. I asked this question a couple weeks ago, and someone responded they should be gapped between .038" and .045" - can someone else confirm this for hte rest of us?

Thanks

Greg

.044, and you should always check the gap even though they are pre-gapped.

I just put some bosch +4 in my maxima about a two months ago. Hopefully this doesn't happen to me. The car runs good though.

They both function and perform the just about the same. The coppers usually last around 30k and platinums around 60k. As for platinums there are platinum plated/coated and pure platinum which obviously has a huge price difference. And there is the coppers 1 step colders which are more beneficial for boosted cars.

Spark Plug/ Part No./ Stock No./ Plug Gap

Standard/ BKR5ES-11/ 2382/ .044
V-Power/ BKR5E-11/ 6953/ .044
G-Power Platinum/ BKR5EGP/ 7090/ .044
Laser Platinum/ PFR5G-11/ 2647/ .044
OE Laser Iridium/ IFR5E11/ 7994/ .044
Iridium IX/ BKR5EIX-11/ 5464/ .044

- From my experience with Bosch +4, I had no problems with them. No loss in gas mileage or power. I had them in my car for about 50k. However, this is just for me and may be different on other users. What i'm trying to tell you is that it is not a 100% fact that Bosch will mess up your car, it varies.

Boosting the car will increase the pressure in cylinders and temperature. Colder plugs will not burn as hot which results in lesser horsepower. But it will help reduce the chance of detonation, run higher levels of boost, and helps in reducing excess heat in combustion chamber.

Don't say we didn't warn you ahead of time.
The gap distance for all these spark plugs is 1.1mm or .0433 inches, which is what the -11 in the model number stands for.

I run NGK Plats.

A colder plug is one that is able to transfer heat from the plug to the cylinder head at a faster rate than a warmer plug. This is done to reduce combustion chamber temperatures in order to prevent detonation. Not necessary unless you are generating more than abut 50 extra hp over stock. I don't think the temperature of the spark itself is changed.
