4th gen MPG
4th gen MPG
Hey guys, I sold my third gen a few months ago, bought a Cherokee, lifted it, and hate it. Now I'm looking to get a 4th gen Max. I would search for this but I can't. I'm just wondering what you get for gas mileage and if you have an automatic or manual. Also any things to watch out for in the 4th generation. Thanks in advance
i have a 1996....automatic...i get about 250 miles per TANK (on full fill). This is city driving with occasional highways in NYC.
That calculates to approx. 18 miles per GALLON. kinda low if you ask me.
Also, i'm driving conservatively...

I get 22 - 24 mpg and thats with the the 02 sensors not all working. Ive had them replaced and still the trouble codes keep coming back. Amazing how nice of a yellow that CEL is!

Seriously.
I never get above 2500 rpm around town and I cruise at about 70 mph on the highway.
I get 21-25 driving 7 mile/trip to work. On the highway, I can never get more than 26 doesn't matter if I use 93 or 91 (mix 89 with 93) octane. I have no CEL, I am not sure how everyone else is getting 30s on the highway. Oh, I have an auto, that maybe why?

Things to check for fuel economy issues:
any ECU codes
knock sensor
O2 sensors
all filters (air, fuel and such)
All fluids
exhaust or intake obstructions
tire pressure
well i just got a new knock sensor
i dont have any ecu codes
i have new plugs, fuel filter, clean tb, clean iacv, new pcv, all the fluids are in good shape, i dont believe that i have any intake or exhaust obstuctions and the tire pressure i good also. but still i has trouble starting in the mornings and after a couple of hours of not being driven and such. i dont have a clue left!

I get the same in my 97 gxe 5spd, but do like to go above 2500 in the city and i definetly go over 70 on the hwy.
I get about 25 or so in town, and I've been averaging 28 on the highway, with the a/c on and windows down. It would be a lot better if I would just set the cruise and let it go...instead of mashing the gas all the time.

You turn on your AC and have the windows down?
Doesn't sound right to me.

I usually just keep the windows down, but it's been pretty warm outside so the a/c adds a nice "cool" breeze. Actually, yesterday I had the heater on and the windows down...seems weird, but I just like the windows down. I'm just trying to keep them down as long as possible, comfortably, before winter.

I'm getting between 10-12MPG on the first tank I used in my max. Mostly because i just got my 97 5 speed on 9/29 and have done nothing but floor it from every stop and run it to red line constantly. I will start to control myself soon, but the max is just so much fun I can't help it.
30 on the hwy?
i get like 27/28 MAX on the hwy, 22-25 around town.
i get on it a bit too often when speeding up, not shifting hard, just holding 2nd/3rd to like 3500 or so; semi-spirited i guess you could say.
5 speed
then again, i dont go slower then 80 on the hwy, maybe if i did ~ 70 it'd be 30+ mpg

I have a 1999 SE auto. I get about 420 mpg to the tank, and I really run it low. I get 23 to 25 mpg. 75% highway. The most I got flat driving out west no AC was 26 mpg. I heard the manuals get a few mpg more depending on how you drive. I give mine a few good thrusts a week.
