I have a 97 maxima, and want to know which aftermarket AIR PANEL FILTERS are out there. Do they really increase the MPG? So far I've only searched

-K&N (the classic)
-HKS (green one)
-FRAM (air hog)

I want to know which brands are out there as well as where I can get some. I'm not looking for the air filter for the intake, but just an OE replacment of the stock air box air filter.

this is always a heated debate, i had the same problem like a month ago i talked to a lot of people including some dude that works at nissan and what i was told was to stick with the cheap 6 or 7 dollar filter.

amsoil makes one as well.

I would just get a higher quality one. K&N or even amsoil would be my pick. HKS is good too. Stay away from anything fram now.

i'm running the K&N drop in filter. It's high airflow and reusable. I like it because I have it air ducted.

S&B is a K&N equivalent. Same quality as K&N, cheaper, but not as widely available.

HKS = Foam filter = BAD

I have and use one on my MR2 but it was free. Will be converting it to Apexi at the end of it's service life.

coby boy, i think i emailed u b4, regarding ordering K&N right? you were the dealer or somethign right?

how do u convert it to apex-i? do you just replace the element?

where can i order the apex-i one? and look for more panel? i did googling, but a lot of the places just sell the HKS green thing, and the regular air intake filters.

i read that the K&N were better in terms of filtering the crap. i saw that the blitz and hks ones are really bad in terms of filtering the crap. but i d k, more air flow sometimes means less filtration.. i would rather have something that helps w/ MPG. but i want to try something that I can re-use and not need the oil like the ones K&N, and wanting something different besides K&N.

dunno if im gonna keep the car, so just want the best for it till i let it go.

K&N is your best bet for a panel filter. They stock our part # at autozone. Cleaning it and oiling it takes a few minutes. If you can run water and operate an aresol can, you're qualified.

The HKS filters are crap. Period.

That being said. You might as well just use the cheapo drop-ins. K&N doesn't change the sound or make any power difference. I got the K&N panel because I had a brand new cleaning kit left over from my civic and it was maybe $35? Pays for itself in a year or two.

Apexi does make a pannel filter but it takes months for JDM parts to get here. Probably want to go with a K&N panel filter, it's readily available.

A gain in MPG would signify more efficient running engine, and therefore would most likely lead to added power, but with the drop ins, don't yeild any power and/or added MPG.

They don't increase your gas milage. They do make it accelerate a little better.

i am still curious as to if they are re-usable adn can be washed like the K&N. I jsut wanna see what other alternatives there are besides teh K&N one.

I'm not positive but the Apexi panel filters may be dry filters as are their cone filters...though again, I'm not positive, especially since I didn't even know any aftermarket/perf companies other than K&N, Green, etc made any OEM type filters for our cars....

Personally, I'd go for a dry panel myself if it flowed better, but like cobymoby said, it can take a while-probably like some months which shouldn't be surprising considering some Nissan oriented perf. companies in the US take that long and more to ship your parts sometimes...

but the thing is where can i order or at least try to inquire? honestly i've tried hard to search, and only 1 so far has teh blitz one going for $40, i didn't see an apex-i for the maxima.

I have the Amsoil filter. They claim it flows as well as the K&N, but does a better job of filtering. It cleans up in normal soapy water, and the oil to re-oil it is very cheap. No huge increase in mpg, but I could hear the intake a bit more and it maybe seemed a bit stronger? Not sure, but I like it fine.

do u use the K&N oil to re-oil?

I have some Japan only parts on the way from Apexi, I'll see if they I can get a hold of some panel filters for our cars while I'm at it.

But don't hold your breath though. It'll take a while.
