well to change these yourself would be very easy.
there is on on the timing chain cover at the side , and the 2nd one is to the right of your oil filter.
in determining which one if you have a volt meter you could test and see which one is faulty.
there is one thing that separates the 2 different sesnors.
one is:
crankshaftposition sensor (REF) - (the one by your oil filter)
crankshaftposition sensor (POS) - (the one by your timing chain cover)
I dont know if these throw different codes or the same.
for the CPS (REF) resistance should be 470-570 ohms (at 68 F) so do it cold in them morning before starting up.
if its not in that range then it must be the other sensor.

I just replaced the POS one. Actually the POS sensor will prevent the car from
starting at all, the symptom is no spark.
In my 1997 maxima, the error code is 0802, and you can check the error code
yourself, it's very easy, pls refer to th STICKY post in this forum.
I guess the hard starting problem should be related to the the REF sensor. You can
check error code to make sure.
One more thing is that the sensor itself is hard to broken. So maybe just a loose
connector causes the problem, and you can fix it yourself easily.
Good luck!
