Odometer and trip odometer not working on 96

I figured I'd post this here before I took it to a mechanic to get it checked out.

I was starting a drive home from college and decided I'd see how many miles my new route was going to take me and I reset my trip odometer. About 10 minutes later, I noticed the miles weren't being put on anymore and they were stuck at 7 miles on the trip odometer and the odometer had frozen. (96 maxima, mechanical odometer)

It's been 3 days since this happened and it's still "stuck". My friend's dad works at a dealership and says it's a few hundred to fix due to the labor of getting the whole gauge cluster off.

Does anybody have experience with this happening on a Maxima? I googled and found nothing about this happening with newer cars nor how much it would cost to fix. If anybody could let me know if they fixed it themselves or if they didn't, how much it cost to have it done, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for reading.

Brian

IIRC, O2 Sensor. Check for codes.

Ah thanks. I'll check that out. I just replaced my front bank rear 02 sensor not too long ago. I'll check for codes and let everybody know if that's the case. Thanks for the reply!

O2 Sensor has nothing to do with a trip odometer. IT has to do with proper fuel/ air mixture. This is either of two thing (SPEED SENSOR, which is right on top of the tranny with one bolt on it, very easy to replace. But here is the catch, is your speedometer working? if so prolly the Cluster that needs replacing....

what mileage is it stuck at? mine was stuck at 105999 until i took the entire cluster apart and pushed it to 106000... then everything was good in the world again.

Yes, my speedometer was working properly.

After a weekend back in the Chicagoland area and then driving back to school at Purdue, the odometer mysteriously started working at almost the exact same spot that it stopped :shock;

So now I'm just hoping that it continues to work. If it stops, I'm going to have to take it to a dealership here at school.

I checked my engine codes like everybody recommended and I got codes that just give me more to worry about until I can get them fixed! I got 01 11

0111
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0111 is detected when ...
- EVAP control system does not operate properly.
- EVAP control system has a leak in the line between intake manifold and EVAP control system pressure sensor.

Possible causes include ...
- EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve stuck closed.
- EVAP control system pressure sensor and its circuit.
- Loose, disconnected, or improper connection of rubber tube.
- Blocked rubber tube.
- Blocked or bent rubber tube to MAP/BARO switch solenoid valve.
- Cracked EVAP canister.
- EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve.
- Closed Throttle Position Switch.
- Improper connection of one-way valve.
- Blocked purge port.
- EVAP canister vent control valve.
03 04

Knock sensor

I think I'm going to wait until I go home for Thanksgiving to replace my KS since I can't do any car work at my apartment here. Does anybody know how serious a 01 11 code is dealing with the EVAP system? I'm not exactly a car guru so I'm not sure what kind of effect it would have in mileage/performance. I recently passed emissions (August) so this must be a recent problem.

I appreciate all the advice you guys have given me. Thanks a lot!

I've got the exact same problem. It's been this way for about a year now. The speedometer works but not the trip and odometer. I've replaced the speedo/odo gauge with a junkyard model and that hasn't helped. Maybe I'll now switch the cluster I have w/ the one that I got from the jy. It's really not a problem for me other than when I'm trying to look for a road about 5.4 miles down a dark road. Anyone else got any suggestions?
