Might buy a new max....
Might buy a new max....
Found a 1998 BLK Max in my area and it has the two things I want most, but do not have with my Max, black leather interior, mine has the awful tan, brown and black, "we are the world" interior, and ABS, which I was told mine had before buying, but like a dumbass, I took the guy's word for it, alas no ABS (in a rush as I had no transportation and a death in the family). It has 109K on the clock. Gotta find out if it is an SE, see it, drive it, have it looked over, and run carfax on it, etc... My question is, for anyone who may know, how can I tell from the VIN if it has ABS or not, or do I have to go look at it physically and look for the rat's nest of hard lines and the ABS sensors?
It is, of course a manual, with an "Exedy clutch and clutch cylinder" and "Hawk HPS and Axxiss Metal Master pads". He's also offering an 18 month 20K mile warranty. tranny has 73K on it, and the alternator was replaced (recall) and a new timing belt(it's a chain right?) tensioner and water pump were also installed. Don't know much else yet, though I will tomorrow. Wish me luck, it's rare to find a black/black leather 5-speed in the 97-99 years, as I'm sure most of you know.
Any other advice would also be graciously accepted, because although this is my second Max, going on my third, I have had very few problems, none with the present, and a new condensor and a new MAF for a 95 SE 5-speed w/187K on the clock I used to own.
BTW he's asking $8,000 for it...sound fair to you guys if it is in good to excellent condition

Good find. Price seems to be fare too. The only thinh that makes me raise BS flag is that you say he put new timing belt. VQ has a timing chain whicj lasts for the life of the engine. Make sure he is not feeding you some bull. Have car inspected at the mechanic.
My thoughts exactly...
Hopefully he just meant to say serpentine belt not timing belt, though I am also concerned by the fact that there is a new clutch, cluth cylinder and tranny. I've found that id not installed properly, some aftermarket clutches will chatter or shudder on engagement. Hopefully, all the replacements were not due to some catastrophic damage earlier. Thanks for the input.

Call him. I'm 99% sure I called about that car a week or so ago and he said it had sold. Same with many 5-speeds I called about, they "just sold it". Luckily I got a '96 SE in immaculate condition inside and out for $4400 from a local private seller who only advertised in the newspaper.
...but is it super blk w/blk leather 97-99 with ABS and a 5-spd?
If so , please link, I have no time to search and my cpu is sh!++!ng the bed. Thank you for the head's up proph, see what I can see elsewhere.
