Remote Programming not working

I have a 96 maxima gle and i just brought a remote for it but i tried programming it many times but the remote still wont program. the only step i am able to complete is inserting the key in and out the ignition 6-10 times and the harzards flash after that i press a button on the remote but the remote and nothing happens (the harzards wont flash again) So i checked to see if i had a remote entry unit in my trunk and it was there.. Is it possible that the remote is not compatable? Does anyone have any ideas..

your not doing it correctly.

- you get in lock the doors
- insert the key 6-10 times (you've done that)
- then after you see the hazards flashing, keep the key inserted and turn to ON position
- push the button on the remote. THEN you should see the harzard flash again.
- its now programed.

unlock door, open, and try it out.

just did it a few days ago when my 2 fobs came in.
