CV joint, boot, axle, or combo?

Hey guys I have this stupid noise comming out from front wheel/wheels. Whenever I go on bumps, or pass speed bumb, I can hear my wheel/wheels make a sound like "krrrkkk, krrrkkk", sometimes it would squeek too. My mechanic told me my boot was broken, but that was a month ago and I still havent fixed it. Anyone know what's exactly at play here and what I really need to fix? I was driving with a broken boot for quiet a long time (3-4 months). Also what tools would I need for this? I know that some of those nuts can give me a hard time. Also would 2 regular car jacks be fine? (thinking of raising the car with my car's jack and my father's car jack - I know its ghetto but I m low on cash as it is to buy good jacks).
Thanks.

1. use jackstands - never work with just the jacks
2. I would recommend replacing the axle - since you have been driving with a torn boot for a while.
3. see www.motorvate.ca for the how-to.

thanks. do u know how much for like aftermarket boot + axle, and would i be able to borrow all the tools from autozone or something (including the jacks)?
What are the technical terms for the axle and the boot please? Motorvate has something like "front wheel bearing r & r".

Make sure you have a breaker bar and a 36MM socket to break loose the axle nut. www.raxles.com has good prices on CVaxles. And mention to them that you found out about them at the maxima.org.

sometimes cheapest means lesser quality part meaning easier to break and need replacement. Shop around any auto parts stores.

How do I identify if it is the right axle or left axle in the front (which one is broken)? Just look under the car and see which side the boot is ripped or do i need them both?

Check the boots on both sides - replace the axle with the torn boot. While you are at it, if the other sides boot is not torn but showing signs of tearing soon - you may just want to keep an eye on it and replace it when it tears (I'm only saying this since you are trying to keep the cost down - if the other side is about to tear soon - you may just want to replace it at the same time).

also, it says to tighten the axle nut to ~200 lb's, how the hell could you tell how to tighten it to ~200 lb's? Is there a rule of thumb for this or what (without the torque gadgets)?
