drop resistor mod
drop resistor mod
alright well ive done some reading on the drop resistor mod, and ive had mixed answers from people. some say it damages your tranny, some say its fine. is it ok for the tranny like as long as u have a switch and its not on all the time? like if i was to drive around with it off then turn it on wenever i wanna race or whatever... would that damage the tranny?
thanks
thanks
We really need a sticky somewhere dedicated to this...
ANYWAYS, the general concensus it's that it does NOT damage your tranny, however some have had bad experiences with it. Your best bet is to have it hooked to a WOT switch and also have a tranny cooler, which will help.
Some seem to think that having the drop resistor connected all the time actually damages your tranny more than having full line pressure (drop resistor mod).....but who really knows? Do it and find out...but take the proper precautions, you'll be glad you did.

It a matter of adding a switch, it a 15 min job.
It probably won't make you go much faster especially N/A. Its main purpose for me is to save the transmission from taking so long to shift and it does work by reducing the wear time on the clutches so there is a REAL benefit.
Its not to be used except at WOT as per the FAQ's, its not for everyday driving.
Where it really shines is when you are really putting down power ie 300 HP+. The transmission takes forever to shift under that much power and the DR mod reduces this time considerably and does made a dramatic difference in 1/4 mile times under those conditions.
I have used this mod for 3 years on 3 different cars that I race almost every weekend with excellent results and many others have as well.
Bottom line, if you haven't tried it and don't have any direct experience STFU. Sorry, I get sick of reading this stuff by people that don't know what the He!! they are talking about.
Thanks for chiming in, Jime. I think everyone should go to the boosted forum and read the suggestion made in the thread entitled "Preparing for Boost?" BruteMax makes a good suggestion there...
He may not use it for daily driving, but I know a lot of people that do, without tranny coolers too. In fact, someone I know (BlueC) intentionally tried to see if he could screw up his transmission by doing the mod (his tranny was in bad shape already) and it actually HELPED his tranny, rather than hurt it.

I didn't say I ONLY used it at the track, it is connected on my car 24/7 and always has been. Using it at the track though is much harder on the transmission than any daily driving. I have it to a WOT switch (as recommended in the FAQ's) so it only activates when I go WOT.
I didn't say I was an expert, however I have used it extensively and experimented with all sorts of methods of connecting and varying the effects.
Tell us your experiences with this mod.

You're entitled to your opinion so DON'T DO THE MOD. It's not for everyday driving. Guys who use it for that purpose have either failed to research its purpose or are blatantly ignoring the warnings. For improved auto performance w/o the drop resistor switch, save your $$$ and get the VB mod, tranny cooler, torque converter, do regular maintenance and bulletproof your tranny.
But whatever you do, DON'T DISRESPECT JIME!

You might have heard of the 'stickies' - check out post #60. Does writing a sticky mean you're an expert? Well maybe not, but I don't see your sticky about why you shouldn't do this mod.

His car's also been published numerous times and he's brought respect to the potential of the Maxima.
You can see that Jime is important to our community and his personal experiences pioneered aspects of our cars so newbies like ourselves wouldn't have to make $$$ mistakes. Now he might have been a little frustrated when he posted his comments to you since there's been a lot of myths floating around on the DR mod over the last couple weeks and he decided to vent. But don't question his authority, **** him off and make him leave this board or stop helping people because if it were up to the .org community, my guess is they'd want him to stay and for you to get the B-A-N.

We have given you more than just HIS experience with it. His alone should be enough to say something, but I also gave you the experience of another member running it as well, and his was full-time even. Now please, let us fight like gentlemen...lol

You got flamed because of your comment
"What the hell do you need to f#ck up your car for a stupid mod like this that most say it doesnt boost performance? Anyways, it will probably create heat in your transmission and wear it off."
with no experience or proof to back it up.
Also saying
"this mod heats up the transmission and that is not good for it"
again is just a rumour.
If you haven't even tried the mod and have no experience please don't spread rumours and hearsay.

I've used it on a switch for over 12,000 miles. Street driven. I use it almost every day. My transmission still has yet to start slipping, and I have over 194,000 miles on it. I don't even use a tranny cooler btw.
enjoyincubus: go for this mod. Don't let the flaming n00b that deserves the
change your mind.
A topic on this subject really needs to be stickied. I would be glad to write it up for a moderator since I have firsthand experience on this topic.

Gears
I've had the DR mod for about 4 months now and i have noticed a few problems:
1. Damn CEL stay go off!! When I pull into AutoZone, I don't even have to go inside anymore, I pull up and Matt walks out with the ECU scanner in hand!
2. Torque-steering is a b!tch!, even though it looks cool!
3. I get dirty looks from people every time it chirps the 1-2!
But other than those problems, I haven't seen anything wrong. Oh and:
4. Suprises anyone who regularly drives a 5-speed how hard it hits.
So, go for it, I say. Just be careful if you activate it at 1/2 throtle...
