Auto tranny problem: is it internal?

I've read quite a few posts on people replacing drop resistors and solenoids, so I just wanted to see if anyone had any idea what's going on here. When I am at a stop light and I press the gas to start moving, there is a noticeable delay before the trans shifts into first gear. It actually starts out in what feels like second gear (of course it can barely get going) for the first couple seconds. In order to get it to go into first gear, I have to push the pedal down quite a bit. It did not do this when I got it, and it's been doing this more and more lately. Does this sound like it's solenoid/resistor related or internal? I have no error codes on the ECU and the AT fluid is fresh. Thanks.

I have that at my 4th gear, dont know what the heck that is though. But I need to flush my transmission fluid and I got 2 codes for knock sensor and egr hi/lo flow... I also think its my transmission but not really sure. Try to press overdrive off button and let me know if you still have that problem. When I turn off the overdrive the problem goes away.
Oh and by the way, there is a seafoam to clean the transmission. I will apply that next week too. It suppose to fix the hesitation as you describe...

I just replaced my knock sensor. It helped with power but did not help the transmission hesitation. Let me know how the cleaning of the transmission goes.

ok man, I ll pm you next week when I get around to drain the transmission oil. but i m a little hesitant cause i heard if the fluid is really old the transmission might not accept any other fluid but the old one that i would drain. dont know about previous owner for first 37k, but now its 88.5k and never did fluid change... well i bought the car from my father but he never did the change cause he kept listening to some bootlegged mechanic of his that AT is good... oh well, i ll just have to see

note that it is amazing ppl try to cheap out on maintance but then to find out the cost of this cheapness costs much deeper scars

I think I have the similiar problem such as yours except mine is taking off in third gear. Yours might really be doing the same. You can check to see by dropping the shifter from "D" to "2" (while keeping the throttle the same) when it is acting up. If you feel the car downshift into second (out of third) you will know it is the same as my car. I posted this problem before and people have told me here that this is normal.

My car does as you described if I come to a quick stop then take off. It will go into first if I come to a complete stop for a second. I have to say that I really hate when the car takes off in third. It is the single thing that I dislike about this car. I get around it by putting it in second as already mentioned above. I have changed the trans. fluid (but not a professional flush) and it didn't help.

Please let me know if you find a fix,
Gears

you're not alone. i'm having problems with the rolling acceleration. if i roll to a stop and go to give it gas, it doesn't downshift to first until it revs past 2k rpms. i hate it and i wish there was a way to fix it other than a 5 speed.

YOu're right, mine is also starting in third. Very strange and annoying. I guess the only real solution is a rebuild.

Tavarish and Irishmax did your transmissions eventually fail or did this problem finally aggrevate you enough to rebuild it? I'm curious because mine has been acting like this for awhile. When you had your transmissions rebuilt did you get them modified/beefed up at all?

Thanks for the input,
Gears

my tranny was completely stock, and was still working when i got it rebuilt, but the problem just aggravated me to the point where it was just a matter of time before total tranny failure.

mine was acting up so i took it in, they dropped the tranny and found a ton of metal shavings on the magnet in the pan, so it needed rebuilt, they wanted 2000 grand for rebuild, so i looked and got a brand new LSD tranny for like 825 shipped,300 install and hopefully by the end of the work week, i get my baby back. i didnt go with the rebuild route, too expensive, but i got really lucky with the tranny i got.
