describe "knocking"

my knock sensor isnt in the best of shape, so i want to bypass it. The thing is since i will be the human knock sensor, i might want to know what to listen for. What will it sound like? isnt it kinda like the pinging noise a hot engine makes, when you turn the engine off after a hard run or what?

Even if you bypass it and be a human knock sensor what will you do to fix the knocking? You can't retard the timing or whatever the knocksensor does can you? I really don't know.

im not thinking my car will actually knock because, i dont think there is actually a problem. The sensor is just bad, but just in case i want to know what knocking is so i dont damage anything. can anyone just describe the sounds, and feelings of the car knocking.

when you hear it, its too late, i would rather buy a new sensor and catch the knock before it becomes audible.
