Replacing Stock Exhaust???

Ok, time to replace the stock muffler. I don't want anything too loud, but something with a litttle more purr then stock would be nice. Suggestions???

Is there any exhasut to get the car to sound say like the G35's/300z's? From my own research I hear MagnaFlow is a decent replacement choice for the mild note I'm seeking. Ohh, and I have a Budget Y-Pipe if it makes a difference.

Dynomax superturbo. With a resonated B-pipe it is just a bit louder than stock. I think it's perfect...just what I wanted.

Does the Dynomax sound smooth... i.e. no droning sound or strange backpressure. From what I've read I think I will like this set-up for the stock replacement. Now I just need to order it and a tip I guess.

Any other suggestions out there? What about the Dynomax compared to a stock 5th gen muffler I could buy?

just out of curiosity what exaclty causes back pressure? is it just too much pressurein a restrictive piping?

I met a guy with the 350Z gutted cat, and he had some bad back pressure when he reved high in neutral.

back pressure exists when there are obstacles in the exhaust piping, for our maxima, it's the precats in the stock y-pipe that creats immediate backpressure. this back pressure will slow down the exit flow of the exhaust gas coming directly from the combustion chambers. this back pressure isn't good for a racing-based vehicle because too much back pressure will push the combustion exhaust back to the chamber itself resulting in blown gaskets and such. some serious cases may be blowing the piston rods. back pressure also exsts when piping is too small to allow exhaust passage. the dealer service shop tells me to keep some back pressure in the exhaust for engine to perform normal. i didn't understand it at all. i only thought back pressure is only bad for the car. in thermodynamics class, i learned that for maximum thermal efficiency, we want to achieve the carnot engine cycle. this in detail has to do with why do we contain back pressure to an extent. basically, the engineers that constructed the engine power cycle is keeping performance and efficiency well balanced. higher performance will cut the fuel efficiency and vice versa. we are car enthusiasts, we start cutting fuel efficiency and persue performance. word...

wow, thanks for the very inepth explanation of backpressure.

I understand it more, but dont understand why we need any at all, I guess the answer to that might be a loong reply? but I understand backpressurenow for sure.

that Z guy I met I belive kept stock pipping but upped the power on his Z by a lot, (ECU, Intake, other stuff I cant remembert).

When you say we are enthusiasts and start cutting fuel effiency are you refereing to when we put a Y-pipe on? and if so cutting fuel efficeince meaning were improving or decreaseing economy? I alway heard we get a little bit better gas economy with a Y-pipe (after market one)?

i agree with the dynomax supertubro and resonated b-pipe... i pretty much have a clone of that system by WSP and i like the sound of it... nice and quiet...

y-pipe > cat > o2 sensor (97-98 i think) > b-pipe > axle back / muffler > tip

i caught a glimpse of the o2 sensor on mine and it looks to be as my diagram () above shows... a whole seperate piece, cuz i know the o2 sensor on 95-96 is on the cat itself... am i right?

I think I'm going to order the Dynomax superturbo and try that out. If I have a Budget Y-pipe and stock everything else which size do I get?

(2 1/4") or (2 1/2")

I guess I will need to buy a tip for the exhaust as well..any suggestions where to buy for a good price?

Bump... Anyone know what size muffler to order give the stock b-bipe. What diameter? (2 1/4") or (2 1/2").

I want to order this dynomax and get it installed very soon. I just need to find a tip as well, guess I'll swing by the muffler place and see what they have.

i dunno i think u have to get a adapter from the stock piping to get it to fit the 2"1/4 inlet of the muffler but i could be wrong. I dunno the diameter of the piping of the OEM b pipe is.

I've got the Budget 2.5" Y-pipe and B-pipe with a 14" Magnaflow resonator and the stock muffler. IMO the noise level is exactly the same as stock.
