V-Tec Maxima?

I was driving around Phila one time and I saw a 4th Gen with a V-tec badge on the back hood. Anyone have any clue why anyone would put a V-tec badge on a Maxima? Do they sell universal controllers or something?

Yeah, I've been running a VTEC controller for a while now.

Definitely gives me more pull when it kicks in.

So your saying...

What do you control with it? Your air-fuel ratio? You obviously can't change your cam point in a Maxima... Or is there something else I'm missing?

It manipulates the engagment point of the johnson rods to give you VTEC.

I got mine from APC.

It works best with the JWT ECU, and with the JWT cams you can control the cam switch over point.

You can run it off of the cam sprocket.

you have to get the conversion kit first...Stillen sells it, part number 402950, but you have to call for it, its special order. and make sure you tell them exactly what kit you're looking for...Vtec/Nissan Variable Timing Tensioner Conversion Kit

Sweet! I ordered mine today too!

Stillen told me that when this is paired with a electronically-adjustable spoiler, it would give my car a AWD type-s affect as long as the wind outside is above 15mph, which in the end they said would give me the ability to torque brake to 5500 rpm (right in the heart of vtec) and have a launch like a spaceship.

No,

all it does is let you adjust where the cam swithover point is, and like deezo said, you can save money on the controller and just use the either cam sprocket using a manual switch.

ummm, if you use the manual switch method, you can burn out the crossover resistors and banlance diodes in the tensioner sensor which can fry your ECU...come on people, stop being cheap...the Stillen converiosn kit is the safest and easiest method to make adjustments

I just installed one on a maxima and it also does a nice job of increasing air flow into the TB and reducing fuel too. The car runs lean but man does it make mad power at 8k......

APC playa forever....

Update: Did anyone get their new titanium muffler bearings that Custommaxima is now selling? They are atleast good for 10hp they are claiming

Wow, you all are a bunch of n00bs why dont you just cut that red VTEC wire from the ECU, and set a switch to manually engage it at 9000RPM.

I actually have a spare v-tec kit if anyone is looking for one. PM me for details and price.

Thanks,

Okay okay...would you guys mind explaining something for a sec?

I was under the impression that VTEC was Honda/Acura's name for a variable cam timing system. I thought that all it did was adjust the tension in the cam timing chains so that the cams could be slightly advanced or retarded to achieve maximum engine efficiency (in terms of power output). To my knowledge, 3rd Gen Maximas had this available as it was a feature of the VE30DE engine available in the '92-'94 SE's, and all VQ35DE's are also so equipped. The VQ30DE was not equipped with variable cam timing (or at least not in the American market).

Is my understanding of VTEC correct? If so, is a conversion really available for the VQ30, and what gains are achieved? Please correct me if I have a misunderstanding.

Stillen carries a conversion kit which price was stated above. I believe the conversion could be done in your driveway but make sure you confirm that with a representative of stillen.

VTEC is simple, instead of one cam per valve, there are two - one optimised towards low-speed operation, one to high-speed operation. In low-speed operation, the low-speed cam pushes the valve, and the cam follower for the high-speed cam is connected to nothing. As engine RPM increases, increased oil pressure pushes a pin, connecting the high-speed follower to the lower-speed one. After that point, the valve opens and closes according to the high-speed profile, which opens the valve further and for a longer time.

Oh and BTW Maximas do not have VTEC, nor do they have the nissan version of it called VVL. SR20VE and SR20VET have it. That guy just wants to be ricey and have VTEC to make ppl think his car is fast. VTEC is not the greatest thing in the world. People (especially honda owners) need to understand that.

Nissan actually beats honda on Hp/liter on an Naturally aspirated production in the SR16VE. It has 197hp which is 123.5hp/L and it beats the S2000 when it was a 2.0L.

So what gains are made with this mod? Is it really beneficial? If so, how come more people don't have it for how cheap it is?
