Is DOT 4 O.K.?

I want to flush my brake system this weekend and want to know if I can use DOT 4 brake fluid in my Maxima? I have a liter of it from a previous car and would like to use it if I can. I think the owners manual says DOT 3, but I'm not sure what the difference is, or if they can me mixed.

Thanks,

Greg

They cannot be mixed.

Just use DOT 3.

Yes DOT 3 and 4 can be mixed....DOT 5 or 5.1 cannot be mixed with each other or DOT 3/4.

The higher the number the higher the boiling point.

5.1 is a silicone based fluid ideal for stored vehicles (common in RV's and military vehicles that sit for months and years). I've tried 5.1 in motorcycle racing applications and it was crap...really spongy. I reverted back to DOT 4 and simply bleed the brakes after each day at the track.

DOT 4 = crotch rockets
DOT 5 = harleys
DOT 3 = cars usually
