RPM guage going crazy!

Lately I've noticed my rpm guage flying all the way over to 8000rpm and sticks there...while driving. Next time it just falls down to 0rpm and stays there. I try to turn off the engine to see if it would start registering when I restart it but that doesn't help. You'll just notice it working all of sudden while your driving. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so what can be done to correct it.

HELP!!!

You might need a new gauge cluster...

in my 92 old cutlass, the RPMs would be very high, bouncing off the rev limiter as the car was started initally. it would go down while driving, but down to 500 or so, nearly killing the car. the mechanic said that there was a hole in the gasket connecting the upper and lower block. mad$ to fix. i didnt fix it, and it runs like sheeit. but it still runs. it also has 195,000 miles.
