Shifter/Transmission Trouble

Just finished installing a 2k manual transmission in my 1996 - everything seemed great on the first test drive, all of a sudden i couldnt get into 2nd gear, it would shift there but then pop out - it needs to be JAMMED there to fit - any ideas on what could be causing this!? All other gears shift into it perfectly just 2nd buzzes when trying to engage...

HELP!

****ed up 2nd gear? TO bearing? Also please don't bump your thread after it's been started only an hour ago or so.

I dont think its the TO bearing, the clutch engages/disengages fine - and 2nd gear works, its jsut like the shift rod isnt long enough to engage it properly.

Are you sure the tranny wasn't already messed up? I don't know much about the trannys but I would think if the shifter rod was long enough for 4 and R, then it should be long enough for 2nd? What do I know though? I'm just jumping into your thread since my 97 tranny is going and I'm thinking about a 5th gen swap. Does rev matching help?

nope rev matching doesnt help at all - the transmission just wont stay in 2nd gear...I manually put the transmission in 2nd gear and it still popped out. I think that I got a junk transmission (so i get to spend another weekend tearing it out and putting in a new one)

I'd have the same theory as Toolrocks. Look on other threads of the swap, see if they actually swapped the shifter rods (are you refering to the rods going from the shifter to the transmission or the shifter itself?). If I'm not mistaking, the shifter itself can be reused no problem, I'm not sure about the rods going to the tranny. If it turns out you don't have to swap them, then it's probably an internal problem with the transmission.
A syncro going bad would usually make you feel a rubbery resistance going into/or out of gear. But I don't know if it would allow the shifter to just pop out of gear like that.

Didn't swap the shifter rods. I don't think anyone else has either. The rod is "to short" as the shifter sits further back with the 5th gen tranny.

In my earlier post, when I was saying "shifter rod" I technically meant the "control rod." From what you replied, I'd agree that you have a bad transmission. Hope that's not the case. Also, can you point me towards some other threads covering this swap - I assume you have them bookmarked? Thanks.

The shiftknob it self pops out, it will not stay in 2nd gear. The control arm and actual black pipe that goes from the bottom of the shifter to the connecting point on the transmission at the stock 4th gen.
