95 Timing Chain

1995 Maxima GLE with 155K miles
recently had been encountering some noise from the timing chain area. While visiting the dealer for an oil change had them diagnose the noise. Dealer says the timing chain, guides and water pump, while they are in there should be replaced, at a cost of $1700. Does this seem like a fair price for the Charlotte ,NC area?
also, once the timing chain goes on this engine, doesn't it mean the engine is near the end of its life anyway?
Still trying to decide whether or not to dump $1700 more in my max. Love the car though, she is the third one i have owned.
Thanks in advance
Steve

There is no recall... there might be a TSB - basically the timing chain tensioner and possible the chain guide need to be replaced. You should be able to find a shop that will replace the waterpump, tensioner and guide for about 500-600 bucks.

Ummm stay away from the stealership... They like to rape you up the you know what...

There is NO recall on this, only a TSB: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=267096 but $1700 is way too much. Head over to the regional section of the forum and ask your local people on where to get it fixed for a cheaper price.

I had mine done recently, the shop rate for labour is 6.5hrs, I changed the guide and chain. No your motor is not near it's end because of this, lots of people are getting 300k and more. Some ppl have done it themselves but it's no easy job for someone inexperienced, my mechanic said it's such a confined area to work in he had to tilt the motor and in hind sight would have considered removing the fender.

one of the reasons i got a Max is because I researched here and someone said the timing chain was meant to last the life of the engine and that's a good thing....

The timing chain does not need to be changed. The only thing that needs to be replaced if you are getting the rattling noise is the main chain tensioner. You don't need to replace the guide, either.

Stephen is correct. I recently replaced my tensioner alone and posted a write up in this forum. I't's a DYI job, but the area is tight to work in, so patience is needed. I'm going to find the link & post it.

Here you go...

Thanks

Thanks to all of you for your quick responses. This forum ROCKS!!
Couple more quick questions....
I grabbed a copy of the TSB (many thanks to the poster)
TSB indicates to change the tensioner and timing chain slack guide, also gives the part numbers. Can you guys suggest a good supplier to purchase these parts from. My plan is to get the parts on hand then shop the job to some local nissan techs. Also, would it be beneficial to go ahead and replace the water pump as well? oh yeah, one other thing, will any major damage be done if i keep driving until i get this fixed?
Thanks in advance
Steve
