brake pad decisions...

had bad experience with afetrmaket pads, but looking for a little more bite (no ABS), for rear, also considering 300Z front conversion...or aftermarket kit..what pads would you reccomend?

I recommend Hawk HPS pads. I have some on the front, and on the next brake job I wiil put them in the back. Stop better than OEM, and have less brake fade (I have not encountered any brake fade for my style of driving).

I have Akibono's on the rear and Bendex on the fronts. No fade, very little brake dust.

bump....

looking to find out best place to order or buy pads and whether or not anyone else had similar squeaking problems when installing pads without the Nissan "rebuild kit" you are supposed to use each time you replace the pads...input would be much appreciated...also interested in the time and expense of converting to 300ZX front rotors, calipers, etc., when compared to aftermarket options....oh yeah, and what is available for the rear, aside from stock sized aftermarket rotors, pads, lines and fluids...any easy rear conversion, maybe from a newer Max or other OEM source?

I remember Bendix, great pads. Right now I hae THX Carbon Metallic pads, they squeal like monkeys and dust like crazy but they stop hard.

So did you use the Nissan OEM "rebuild" kit or not when you installed the THX pads??

Yea I bought a brand new kit from the dealer, it was only 20 bucks and the anti squeal compound on the pistons... but they still squeal.

The best is when you really get on them and brake hard, they chatter like crazy.

Squealing is what lets you know its a hard bitting pad. If you don't want squeal you don't want to stop either. I recomend Porterfield R4-S. Everyone will tell you what they like but they are all very close if your looking at similar style pads. Hawks, Porterfields R4-S' , Axis MM are all street pads. They will sqeal and dust more than stock but thats the price you pay for bite. Just pick out of a hat from these brands cause there aren't many people that have tried more than two brands so they can't all be compared. Fade isn't an issue for normal street use but it isn't fair to say that fade is non-existant. That is not possible on these types of pads. Any non-race pad will fade if you are driving hard. Its just which one fades last and least.
