Odometer quit on me !!!

Hey guys, I have a 96 SE and the odometer stopped working. It actually would work intermitently and now it's not working at all. Any ideas what it could be. Is it a speed sensor? Would it be the speedo/odometer itself that is bad? The speedo still works, it's just not clicking the miles off like it should.

I checked the FAQ page, but everytime I use that thing it comes back with 0 threads found. Thanks in advance for any help.

nows a great oppurtunity to put a crap load of miles on it, then get the odo fixed and sell it. sorry I can't help though.

Try checking fuses. Are you getting any ECU codes?

LOL Yea, I could just keep it at 100k for another, oh, 200k or so. I guess I just want to keep track of the actual miles I have on the car and to also be able to use the trip odo. If anyone else has any ideas, shoot em my way.

Everyone who want this guy to scam should be banned from the for sale/trade section. How could you do that to someone?

Check your codes and check your fuses man.

Everyone else who told him to scam you need to grow up and it would be nice if you bought a different car and leave the community. Cause if you willing to lie on the mileage of your car its no telling what else you would lie about.

Does your speedometer work? My speedometer went out last year and it stopped counting the miles. It was due to a faulty speed sensor. Took my sweet a$$ time changing it, I could still tell how fast I was going by RPMs.

My speedo works fine. It's as if I drive for a mile or so and the odometer just stops working for the rest of the trip. I don't want to have to change the odometer itself, since then the mileage on my car would be inaccurate for resale. I fear it could be a mechanical issue, but I will check for codes and see if there are any. I don't think it's a fuse situation, but I'll check that too.

Hi Daveyg68,
Basically you will have replace the speedometer. Your speed sensor is fine, it's the gears in the odometer portion of the speedometer. Price at my local dealer is around $450. They can reset the odometer for you before installing to get pretty close to what you have on it now. I have the same problem also, but, not wanting to spend the money right now, I started tapping the reset **** for the trip odometer until the the gears reengaged. The odometer is working again, but I don't dare reset the trip odometer until I finally decide to replace the unit. I used to reset the trip odo every time I filled up. My understanding is the gears in the trip odometer get scrubbed whenever you reset it, and it gradually wears out. This may or may not work for you, but at least it doesn't cost anything to try. Good luck.

hcfmaxima,

Thanks for the info on the odometer. I was afraid that that was the case. I have tried to reset the trip odometer while driving and it doesn't seem to get the odometer to go again. I figured that it was a gear meshing problem since it would work for a very short time and then quit again. I'm not going to ante up 450.00 for a speedo/odometer though. I'll just have to find one that someone wants to sell where the mileage is pretty close to mine.

vsamoylov,

My gauges are white and I wouldn't go any other way than with the original. Maybe it's possible to keep my gauges and use your odometer internals though. How much do you want for the set up. Email me @ daveyg68@aol.com
